I recently bought a night vision monocular and would like the extend the veiwing distance by means of extra illumination. I have ordered a 808nM 200mW laser module, just a cheap chinese one. And i am wondering what safety precautions i should take and how i can difuse the beam appropriately to get a nice spread of maybe 2m at say 30m distance?

You can have it slightly unfocused so the beam diverges to whatever size you desire at a set distance. As far as safety it depends on how you plan on using it. Viewing it through the NVD wouldn't harm you at all.

I'm not sure if it has a focus adjustment or not so i may have to get a lense to diffuse it. I don't know alot about lasers but is 200mW enough to damage your eyes severely with just a glimpse, or is it relatively safe as long as i don't stare into it?

Most of the Aixiz modules, which I assume is what your diode is housed in, come with the lens. If you have a link to what you ordered I could check it out. For out side use with a beam that diverges enough to be used as illumination shouldn't harm you. That being said I wouldn't turn it on, aim it at a table your sitting at, and try to find the dot. Problem with IR is you can damage your eyes without even knowing it because its outside of the visible spectrum and you won't have that "close you're eyes its bright" reflex.

This will produce a thin wide line. There may be a lens in there that you can focus.
