I want to know a method to make such a laser.
What will the necessary parts be?

Jesus christ is he wearing glasses? Didn't see any... even with some safety glasses pointing 50 watts of ir at glass really isn't the smartest thing to do... I feel sorry for his retinas

Even though he isn't wearing plastic goggles , 10.6uM is absorbed very very well by card and glass , but there probably are still diffused reflections but they would only damage the surface of the eye ( not the point ) as the wavelength is to long to enter to eye , just cheap 50p plastic goggles would work perfectly fine .

OP , really if you have to ask , should you try it ?

Its just a 50W co2 laser tube and a PSU mounted into a plastic casing and the guy in the video has just used a DC to AC inverter to then drive the co2 PSU and just stuck it in a box .

Agreed it's very possible. But what do you need a 50w co2 in a GUN for?

Yes he should be wearing goggles and normal polycarbonate will work just fine.BUT 10.6um is absorbed by pretty much everything except metal. Even glass absorbs it near 100%. Lol kinda funny eh since we pretty much use it only for metal. Oh well there's always YAG for that. :)

I'm not the greatest goggle-advocate around here, but he *really* should be using goggles.

Much like 555 has noted; there is far less danger to the user than with short wavelengths.

I've done this too, but with the 15W one I had (and just sold). I didn't have it LiPo powered, but on a long extension cord.

Incredibly painful corneal burns are all that would occur from stray reflections, and typically the divergence on these lasers is so bad that there is little danger. A mere three feet out from aperture and the beam is a multi-centimeter hollow donut. I used to make toast with it.

For all we know he could have been wearing contacts and been relatively safe from harm.*

* A focused or spot on beam would have shattered/burned the lens and caused risk of cuts and burns, but no direct corneal ablation.

Not long at all. It depends on ambient temperature and fill-water temp. Tubes should NEVER be run "dry", but closed loop short durations are OK. On my 15W laser, you could do a 120sec burn if water temp was about 60F, but that was pushing it. If water temp was around 40F you could do about 210sec, but again that was getting a bit unconfortable, and I'd always make sure to slosh the water around a bit to equalize temperature gradients.

He also lets soot and flames flare back at the OC mirror, so I'm pretty sure he isn't too concerned with laser tube life.

Not even. Diffuse reflections at this wavelength are virtually harmless. The dose to your cornea is going to be a lot higher just looking at a stove or a campfire.

Obviously he doesn't know how bad the divergence of a CO2 laser is. Several mRad, by the way. ZnSe lenses don't really come any larger than 2", so let's say he could expand to 2" from 7mm which is 7x, so he'd be somewhere around 0.5mRad at BEST. The beam would be 80 meters wide at 100 miles.

Oh, and let's not forget atmospheric absorption is going to eat up maybe 40% of the power. Maybe more (it's hard to find figures on this). IR doesn't pass through air as well as visible does.

Military tech patents are big business, maybe he is trying to get his share of the cash, although I don't think the forces will be after a laser gun anytime soon.
