500 mw green??

Did some Googling and didnt find much. There was a lot of talk about a Nichia Laser 444nm diode, but when you went into the website all the info was removed. Anyone else have any luck?

Information regarding this specific wavelength of GaN diodes will probably be found more under 445nm than 444. He's probably just listing the nominal center wavelength. Diodes tend to emit a bit broader of a spectrum than most other lasers, and they vary considerably with temperature change, so there's really a range of wavelengths that can be stated. With blu-ray diodes I've seen 405nm, 407nm, even 410nm.. Pump diodes are occasionally referred to as 810nm instead of 808nm.. In this case we have 444nm and 445nm, both referring to the same thing, but 445nm is the most common designation.

EDIT: Can't find too much either.. Found some technical documents describing their use in laser TVs and HD projectors, but no source for purchase. No reference to a 500mW 5.6mm can diode. I'm still not too skeptical that such a diode exists, due to input from a certain member here who knows a TON about GaN diodes.. in fact he's a foremost authority. GaN diodes are easily capable of such powers and more while running singlemode.. the class IV blu-ray pointers found around here are proof of that. If this guy works for a company that does laser TV/Projector technology they could be quite easy to come by. There is a growing demand for them, that's for sure.

Well so far he's been honest with information right? He even told me that whatever price the bid ends up as will be the future buy it now price.

Cant wait till these come down to a hobbyist price level. I know if they are real, its a bargain, but I wont be see one anytime to soon.

I asked the guy whats up with a couple of things, here is what he said.

About the leads being tinned - I had a pretty good idea based on the listing. This is not a new diode, it has 10 hours of "burn in" time. Whatever that means I have no idea. That is probably why the leads are tinned.

About the missing pin - The pin that is missing is the case pin. The diode has a floating anode and cathode, so the pin for the diode case is not necessary and it was cut off.

About where it came from - He says that if I do my research I will find a company that makes these particular diodes with this case size and power range. I've seen a spec sheet of a diode this size and power level somewhere on this forum IIRC so that makes sense. I can understand why he doesn't want to reveal where he gets them, that's just business. But I think he could at least say who makes them.

It seems shady, but IMHO I think it is legit. I would wait 3 months and these things will be all over ebay like red and blu diodes are now. You couldn't buy red diodes around 200mW on ebay 4 years back, let alone blu, but its common now. It had to start somewhere, and I think this is it.

Now if only I could win that lottery, I would test this for the good of the group. I swear I really don't want it for myself

I can tell you I'm NOT a fan of cutting the case pin off. Personally I've found that "floating case" diodes are much less susceptible to ESD when you ground the case pin.

Well, its not so much cut off, its just extremely shortened You would probably be able to solder a lead to that nub, but I wouldn't try with a diode that expensive. My luck I would cook it.

My feeling is that it's legitimate because of that BluRay question about the Kipkay thing. He told someone NOT to buy it if it was for the Kipkay burning violet laser. I think a scammer would be like "yeah, definitely buy it for that!"

There seems to be a "give reasons why you aren't buying it" thing going on here, so here's mine. Even knowing full well it wasn't a scam and that i would get a 500mW 445 or 444nm diode I don't have that sort of money to put into what is effectively a toy. Not to mention i wouldn't know what to do with it, haven't got an eBay account, don't know how to order off eBay and would be too afraid to order $300 merchandise online. Finally, if i had $300 i would spend it on lasers, but not this one.

One thing we can try, is to watch the feedback that this seller receives, if everything checks out it may be a good sign.

I assume that ALL GaN diode operate at 5- 5.5V?

if the "buyer" isn´t his accessory.

After all of our messages to him he know that many people are interested.

That's a reasonable value, certainly.

You can't really say "all" for anything of this nature, but that is a very typical value.

Seems it went for $760 in the end. No feedback as yet and no other items for sale either but the auction only ended 3 days ago so it might not even have been delivered yet.

Just thought I'd give a conclusion to the eventual sale price for the benefit of the thread.

We talked about it in laserchat. It's a multimode diode. Not really worth it. I have no desire for it. 470 dollars. I asked the guy if he could get a lower power single mode and he said no.
