Hi,
I have wanted to pull some laser diodes from DVD burners for some time. I have a bucket-load of diodes from many sources : CD/DVD, photocopiers, printers and so on, but I'm sure they are all IR. I want a red one so I can see it. I'm not particularly interested in burning anything , except the wife, at the moment.
I'm hoping to create a light link across the garden to transmit video pics from a CCTV camera, but getting info on that has proved elusive ( maybe it cant be done? )
Among the devices I have salvaged, I think maybe there have been some DVD burners, but I didnt keep my eye on the ball ( pun intended ) so I dont know which is which.
I scrapped some DVDs from laptops, and I suspect they may have been burners.
Among them were 4-pin diodes which were flat plastic ones. There are threads on 4-pin devices, but they're all the TO-18 can ones. Does anyone have info on these flat-packs?
BTW, to complicate matters, I have also seen that there are 4-pin TO-18 diodes which are only IR. These are VCSEL devices, IIRC. I'm not sure how you sort this out.
It occurs to me that this post is slightly rambling, but I would welcome responses on all the issues raises. You never know what it is you dont know, until you know it.

Bruce
