that laser is owned by styropyro, the attention isn't great but at least some of the news articles sated that he wore safety goggles and that its legal to own in the U.S despite other information being inaccurate in the articles such as him making the laser himself.

Reminds me of the WL Arctic Hype and the Kipper.

Yeah I know I sent him a message he did nothing wrong and it's a beautiful laser  I am just saying this is going to bring attention to the laser community good and bad.

That's exactly my point... Spyro didn't think this one out.
With all the aircraft Laser incidents in the news lately the
FDA will no doubt be looking closer into this once they
get a whiff of it...

I just hate giving any authorities reasons to shut things
down..

Well, frankly, being CNN, I am quite surprised it wasn't more of a "panic piece". They were sure to mention it wasn't for kids...They, being CNN, could have gone much worse.

I don't see why there is a problem, I always push safety in my videos. I talked to CNN on the phone yesterday and explained laser safety, as well as real world applications for lasers. They weren't freaked out or anything.

More rep for you, SP. It's really appreciated how responsible you are with regard to safety, and attempting to make sure everyone understands how important it is.

I'd be right there with you, if I had a decent camera working, and the nice video authoring software.

All I'm using is a Canon Powershot and Windows Movie Maker. :D

I remind you of KipKay?? Do you see me shining lasers near my eye or direct driving laser diodes? This is not a valid comparison. I always push safety.

That's funny, Drake. I have an RMA to send my Canon PS back to be fixed. I'm relying on my crappy iPhone these days.

Quote from my video description:

To be honest I don't even like handheld lasers this strong, but I knew my subscribers would like this! This laser is legal to own in the US, and I wore goggles while shooting this video.

UPDATE: This video is getting a LOT of publicity so I better clear some things up. It is 100% percent legal to build and own a laser like this in the US, the FDA just regulates the sale, import, and operation of these lasers. I absolutely do NOT sell lasers over 5mW, so please stop asking. Laser safety is the most important issue to me when shooting these videos and I ALWAYS use certified laser protection when operating ANY laser over 5mW.

Thank you for watching! BTW, I am 20, not 17 like all the news articles say. :D

I think it's great that your channel has got all this publicity, styro :). Even though it may bring some attention to lasers, I don't think there will be too much of a negative impact.

Congrats Kipkay, I mean...styropyro :shhh:

Don't get your panties in a knot Styro....;)

Of course not... I know you have always pushed safety.

I was referring to the WL media Hype about the "worlds most
powerfull Laser" that could burn the skin off your body...
Do you remember that media fail... It sent an influx of underage
noobs to LPF to get their MegaWatt Lasers...

I was merely stating that attracting unnecessary Media attention
(all the kids will want one) to our Laser hobby won't help to keep
out even more restrictions...

Oh OK, sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't want anyone to believe that I have not done my part to preserve the laser hobby. I love the hobby just as much of all of you and would hate to see it ruined.

The news articles have been pretty good so far when referring to safety. Read the Discovery article posted: Crazy Homemade Lightsaber Burns Through Objects : Discovery News

I've gotten a lot of publicity in the past and will probably continue to get more publicity, and I will always do my part to preserve the hobby. I know I've bought many people to this forum through my videos and I'm glad I could bring them here before they go out and buy a 445.
