20x long open can diode- 9volt battery

I already know that a driver cicuit is desired to be used to protect the diode itself and provide a longer diode life span ,but can a 20x dvd red long open can diode survive being "straight wired" to a regular 9volt battery say a typical energizer battery using a simple momentary switch to cycle on and off for very short duty cycles say 5-10 seconds with 30 seconds off and very good heat sinking? Also what milliamperage would a 9volt send to the diode without a driver/regulater circuit and what kind of mw output do you think it would produce with a good nonreflective merideth glass lens? If you have ever tried this let me know how the diode did please and it's typical life span too. THANKS!

The 9V block batteries generally cannot deliver very much current, so it might just work. The clever way to test this would be to hook up the LD, a ~20 Ohm pot, and a multimeter on a 2A (or higher) setting in series with the diode, with the pot initially at max resistance. Then slowly turn it down and see what happens to the current.

Operating a LOC directly off a CR123A battery should work (and result in ~300mA).

I don't think you should try directly hooking it up to a 9v diode.
