As many know, Kennedy Space Center has been pointing a 150W 25mm laser into space. I thought I'd post some pictures I found online. May add more if I can find any.

Haha, yes it does. Alot better actually. I wonder if it would be able to burn a hole in your hand by holding it in front of it, 25mm beam isn't exactly focused.

By using a lens to focus it into a very thin beam at a certain point, right? Of course you can't focus a beam entirely, if you thought that's what I meant. Or am I saying something very wrong now?

Well, focus might not be the best name for it, power density covers it better. 150W @ 25mm diameter is about 300mW/mm2.
So power density would be equal to a 300mW Pointer with a little over 1mm beam diameter, which would just hurt...quite a bit ;)

That's phenomenal green beam goin deep in the sky and I'm only 1/150 of that.

Now thats POWER ....

Any idea WHY they are doing this ? trying to turn the moon green ?
just cos thay can ? , intersteller communication ? waiting on feedback to test atmospheres
suppose i better google it to find out

It was for one day to act as a beacon to show the path of the launch testing the new Orion spacecraft back on Dec. 4, but apparently they will use it again from Dec. 26 - 31 as part of a light show they are doing for the holidays. They say at times it may be visible not only in Orlando but throughout central Florida, also the beam is so bright that they can see it from the ISS.

I'm going to go look outside to see if I can get some pictures when they shine it again. I am near Orlando. Last time I tried the night before the launch, but it was cloudy.

If your in range to see it there is also a launch this Friday the 19th at 1:20 PM of a Space X Falcon 9 launching a Dragon capsule on its fifth resupply mission to the ISS, no laser though but maybe you can see the launch.
