I guys I have a question, i know someone whom builds and sells homemade portable hand held lasers, his best one can burn through a couple of inches of steel in a few seconds, he's priced it at $10'000.

Can any of you here construct a laser comparable to that calibre? and how much would you price it at?

Well, in order to "burn through a couple inches of steel in a few seconds" you'd need a pretty serious laser, most likely IR. It could be done with a CO2 laser (big, bulky, and at the power required to "burn through a couple inches of steel in a few seconds" NOT handheld) or a diode array (big, bulky, and at the power required to "burn through a couple inches of steel in a few seconds" NOT handheld) or possibly a q-switched YAG laser (big, bulky, and at the power required to "burn through a couple inches of steel in a few seconds" NOT handheld)..

So you see where I'm going here? My bullshit-o-meter is pegged right about now..

I can build you laser 5W, but it is multiline argon, with about 12 lines centered around 488nm. 12x5=60W of pure power! I will sell it for $900 + shipping

LOL well thanks guys for all your input, its just I was talking with someone at another forum whom was building and selling lasers, I asked him what his most expensive laser was and he then gave me the shpeel about the $10'000 laser which could penetrate steel. I not only believed him because of my lack of knowledge on lasers, but also because this dealer has a very good rep rating(which I guess doesn't really mean that much).

And Bshan please tell me more about this $900 laser you'd sell, what is "multiline argon"? I am assuming thats a component which makes this laser worth as much as $900?

I also understand that some lasers use uranium marbles as well? Could you fill me in a bit?

I wouldn't get too excited about that specific laser as it's fictitious, intended as a joke. There are multiline argon lasers, but the one bshanahan mentioned is a little bit too good to be true, just like the idea of a handheld laser burning through inches of steel in seconds.

It's not that lasers "use" uranium marbles in the process of producing a beam, but blue and purple lasers cause uranium marbles to fluoresce just like the do under a blacklight only much brighter. It's a cool effect..

No, no, no. You don't want the ones with a uranium marble . For the most power you need plutonium, that is why it would be so expensive. Have you seen the price of plutonium lately?

Yeah so I'm not seeing where he's trolling at the moment, plus I make trolls my bitches for fun so if he does I've got it under control(e?)..

Unless we've got something constructive to add I say we cut the guy a little slack mmmmk?
