Hey everyone!

I've built myself a 1 watt blue laser with:

Aixiz Laser housing and appropriate glass lens
445 nm 1 watt laser diode
Microboost Driver

I'm wondering what kind of heatsink I should use. I plan to fire the laser for short bursts only <60 secs.
Is THIS one good, or should I get THIS

Oh, and also, I can't use one of those "box" heatsinks, as this laser needs to be portable.

Next time just edit your Original Post instead of double posting.

The heatsink you'll need all depends on the measurements of the host you'll be using.
Got any pics?

The laser parts are on order from ebay, so I don't have a pic yet :(

THIS is the link to what my module will be when I finish assembling it.

As for measurements, it's all contained in a standard Aixiz housing

I'm using an Ultrafire WF-503c

Is the stock heatsink enough? Especially since I'll be firing the laser in short bursts....

Not so sure about what you mean by stock heatsink, but the LED heatsink in the Ultrafire is flat, which is unsuitable for laser diodes. LD heatsinks need to be a cylindrical prism with a hole in it for the module.

You "can" use the two heatsinks you first posted but you'll have to find a way to secure it tightly in the host. What you could do is either send the host to a machinist to have a custom heatsink made or measure the dimensions yourself and get a heatsink made.

Again, use the two links I posted to get one made.

Cheers.

When I said "stock", I meant the one that came with the Ultrafire :D

So, it would be worth it to get a custom heatsink?

EDIT--------------

Can I use any of the pre-made ones instead of getting custom?

Unless there are premade heatsinks for your host, no, you generally won't be able to use another heatsink. It simply won't fit.

Unless you want to "glue" your heatsink inside the host, you'll have to buy a specific one.

Cheers!

With the Ultrafie C3 host it is possible to use the stock reflector as a heatsink. You need to drill the hole out to fit the module. I think Lazeerer did that once :)

Nope, because LED bases and LD modules are shaped differently, and thus their heatsinks are different.

For a ready to build kit, you could check out the survival lasers kit here:

Blue Laser Parts Bundles

Very cool, and also jaw droppingly expensive, in my opinion. :)

Good luck!

Wow... that's incredibly expensive.... :)

So, can you recommend some sites that sell host/heatsink kits?

I've already seen CajunLasers (not exactly the styles I like), any others like it?

Mohgasm used to sell dirt cheap kits ($20-30) until he closed his business. :undecided:

However, some members do sell them as well.

Check out LPF's pro shop here:

Laser Pro Shop - Laser Pointer Forums - Discuss Lasers & Laser Pointers

and you can choose from many available kits that already have heatsinks specifically designed for laser diodes.

Good luck!

Edit: OR what the heck, Blord's 1.3W lasers are really good for their awesome price as well.

That'll do nicely. There's not much room to work with it those tiny guys though so I hope you're good at soldering and heatshrinking ;)
