Unbelieveable how much resellers want for a Laser plus power supply!!!

Given that these systems approach $10,000 new, that's not such a terrible price for someone who isn't ingrained into our community of enthusiasts. The prices we see here do not apply to the real world as a whole, and it's tough to say that it's a rip-off since an average buyer with no knowledge of or ties to the enthusiast community would probably be more willing to pay $3500 for a used system than $10,000 for a new one.
Yeah - I can see that... I also collect old Unix workstations and servers (Sun, SGI, etc)... parts for those systems on the resale market can go for hundreds of dollars, but the collectors give them away for free or just the cost of shipping...
I was just shocked that a tube from what looks like 2000 would go for that much... I also noticed drastic variances in the used Dna sequencer prices... anywhere from $200 to over $5-6000... That's what sparked my interest - seeing if there were any old labs that had closed up and were scrapping out their equipment... maybe pick up some items used / surplus and pull the laser units, etc...

Yeah, it could easily be a rip-off too. A buyer wouldn't know unless they bought it.. at which time it's usually too late.
Best to stick with members of our community.. still not a guarantee that you won't end up with a bad unit, since lasers are finicky, but there's less chance of being outright ripped off.

SGI? That's so cool! what kind of stuff do you have? I have 3 octane's, 3 O2's, 2 indy's, 1 indigo2, 3 origin200's and one 8CPU 4gig mem origin 2000 monster
And I have 3 argon lasers, got them free from my university. Spectra Physics stabilite 2016 and 2017 and a lexel 85. Those are over 1 meter long and require water cooling and have a huge power plug.
I guess I like big stuff.

Funny, I have a stack of workstations too. Two SGIs, one Indy and one Indigo, and a bunch of Suns ranging from the 3/80 and early Sparcs to an Ultra 10 and a few Netra 1U servers. This stuff cost more than my house when it was new, just the IPC currently serving as a book end on my shelf was originally $12K, but I'd be lucky to get $200 from the whole pile now.

The origin 2000 I got from my university was new 200,000 gulden, around 100,000 euro. In terms of speed it's slow, but the quality put into those machines is still that high level. They don't make em like they used to

That's probably one of the unique deals on ebay, they don't show up in batches. I once missed a tunable hene head on ebay, went for around 30 euro. But only afterwards I knew enough about lasers to know what I missed. The condition was unknown though.
