Ouch. Be careful - if that's been sitting too long, it's definitely dead. Guy says he can't turn it on because he doesn't have the key, so that's likely the case; but... I really wonder what that'll go for...

Shame it wasn't buy-it-now... I do have a key that'll likely fit this, and could probably get a copy made, but it's a risk, and it's hard to say what it'll end up going for. It's also missing the interlock plug, which would have to be fabricated or jumpered somehow. I could probably go off of mine on that, too.

If these aren't run monthly, well: they're soft-sealed, and they tend to lose lines, or not lase at all.

Mine is an LSTP-0010 mfr'd 1991; this one is an LSTP-0050, mfr'd 1987.

My LSTP-0010 is doing well above what a 'new' LSTP-1010 would do... As far as I know nobody knows exactly what the specs on the LSTP-0050 were; even Sam's Laser FAQ says he has no idea what this is.

This would definitely be a 'project laser', but it may not be restorable at all... Tempting but... depending on how high it goes, it could also be a rather nerve-wracking auction...

I've only seen 2 tunable hene lasers in the last 3 years on ebay, one where I figured out it was tunable just after the auction (that went for ~30 euro), one going for ~$275 and it was low power and no green line. If I remember correctly at least.

Yeah, the green line is the weakest and usually the first to go missing. With lasers, 'untested' usually means 'unworking' on ebay, so it'll be interesting.

Shipping this thing would scare me, too. Mine survived shipping, but that's only because Sam had a box with packing meant to ship this sot of thing.

If I thought it would work, I would offer to pick it up for someone. It's about 3 or 4 hour drive from my place. It a little long to drive for what I'm sure will end up a boat anchor. :(

i may take you up on that ^^^ I am the curran t high bidder- since there was no bids I assumed that the OP was not interested in Bidding- I never bid against any laser forum member bidder that make his (or hers) intentions known. According to Sam- untested means dead. And aryntha seems to agree..... so that being said I am still willing to take the chance but not if it goes high. GL to whomever wins.

My bid has already been bumped up by Ebay autobid.

wish me luck

hak

i will need it imo

Hak, if you do win it, I can test it and likely fab a new key and interlock plug. But again if it hasnt been run in a few years .... Well...

And here I will offer up this thread...

where the seller also claimed he had no key for it...

http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/6-lasers-sale-trade-3-henes-66496.html

That had single line (730.5nm) mirrors in it.

After significant work, I can get a plasma, but no lasing yet :(

Ah, I brought it up because he had 3 of them, and I never found out where they ended up.

And yes, I do try and keep track of where those tunable/orange lines end up. ;)

Yeah. The other "classic" in the batch broke in shipping because of ineffective packaging :(

hmm. Just heard back from the seller of this laser, trying to ask when it was last turned on, etc. I guess others had the same idea.

She says that the "tube appears to be in good shape" (I don't know how she'd know, unless she opened it, in which case, if you look at Sam's Laser Faq, it probably will DEFINITELY not lase out of the box) - but I doubt that's the case... -- and that she has "10 bidders trying to buy this laser".

...Kinda funny, eBay only says 4 bids.

I tried to remain impartial and separated in my message about its condition.

Let's not act too excited or desparate in any messages to the seller, lest they end up expecting $2000+ for what is in all likelihood little more than a 633nm conversation piece with memories of lines past. Unless you have karma coming to you (Hak?)... Honestly, I hope someone from here does win it, as I do think, say, my key+pinout and Dave's expertise could help get it working if it CAN be made to work.

Of course, a thread on the world's most active laser forum will certainly drive up the price. :shhh:

My highest bid has been beaten- hopefully not by a fellow LPF member- In any event I do hope whomever wins it can get it running.

Its a fairly common unehtical practice to re-list a laser received DOA and claim they had no way to test and it looks fab on the outside..I saw one a-hole offering an untested laser as they claimed to have no way to test and they had the PS also listed seperately with no common plug on it. Claiming they did not know which HeNe it was for--TY Sam for your Data base of matching up heads and PSs.

Ya know its a pretty Hi-Tech procedure to add a plug to a wire 'No means of testing' my ass.

Always look at seller FB and other listings, current AND completed. AND completed listing for same or similar items- EBay USED to give listings completed much further back but now they only go back so far-- just one more way to help the scammers do thier dirty tricks.

thanks for the posts guys and the kind offer of help Matt.

I did-- I had seen the listing(saved searches for all HeNe listings) and did a LPF search and saw this thread-I will take a guess that the seller bought it and it was DOA so they set up the FeeBay account to dump it off on someone else-(shame shame shame!!) but if it was cheap enuogh I was willing to give it a go--but that did not happen- no more bids on it from me, for sure.

It is very obviously dead. Dec 1987... These lasers only last about 10 years MAX idle, and it probably came from a lab bankruptcy sale of the "we no longer use it" room. Like argon lasers they need to be run at least once a month for at least a few hours to keep the tube healthy.
