So does that mean that you don't know whether it works or not?

I may be considering this Dave...

You have as much guarantee as the other 15 or so of these that were made. AFAIK, they all worked. IIRC, Mike got three of them.

If I had made the effort to hook it up, you would not be seeing it here for $200 ;)

Peace,
dave

Dave -- Maybe the high current input requirements has driven them off. I used two of those hand held car starting packs for my first try. At FULL charge, I had about 28 volts and was able to test mine out. Now I use 8 x 25650 cells or a 28 volt DC supply cranked to max.

IIRC they will run with as little as 24V.

However, I cannot find the paperwork on it.

It must have been in the box of stuff that was stolen :scowl:

I'll try to search back through the forum for the threads from other people who got these

Dave ---
I think anything between 24 and 32 volts is OK for the final amp.
Maybe Chris will see this and comment here.
Funny -- every one wants POWER but no one has stepped in.

Most of them are looking for guarantees nowadays. There are not as many hard core experimenters, like us, here today. Even a really good price is not enough. They want a video and a printed graph of the finished laser operating. Maybe I'll go ahead and hook it all up and then sell it for more ;)

I think we have over 9,000 members and only about 100 of us actually experiment and build? I still think we need a special forum for the experimenters. Perhaps a place reserved for the advanced experimenter would encourage 2,000 others to get going and stop playing tv games and causing trouble. They might learn Ohm's Law !!!!

You know that I agree. I thought that you were already working on this. Do you want me to spearhead it?

Avery PM'd me back and I haven't had time to formulate a plan and reply.
I think it would encourage a bunch to rise above appliance opperator status and enjoy the feeling of success. Winning a TV game leads to nothing but this would be a real goal. If you want to push some too -- go ahead.

I'm wasting my time ordering a selection of ballast resistors from Digi-Key right now. And looking for clear tubing.

Call it "The Skonk Werks" !!!!

Gee I remember my first HeNe, I could not afford the tube and power supply at the same time.

Out of necessity I had to fabricate a high voltage supply from scratch if I ever wanted to see the tube light.

I know my supply was not even close to spec, but my tube lased..... I was happy.

It was years later when Meridith had a sale on supplies that I got a proper power pack to run it, I was happy all over again, because it lased even better.

Growing up, I had to fabricate and build most of my projects from scratch, it was rewarding and fun, plus it led to a career path that I never regretted yet.

I got this green running at 6.6 mA and I'm reading about 2.8 mW. I bought it as 2.2 mW -- guess I'm happy. Lots of high voltage will light them. I think someone was using a taser the other night!!

i have done nothing but ohms law for months now! i have used it every single day of my dc electronics class!! its useful but the repetitiveness really gets on my nerves... i would love to have this laser dave is selling but i believe its a little much for me... my wife would kill me for spending the money and i would probably go blind or burn my house down... just not ready for it yet...

Billy --- This is an RF excited laser tube and just the RF voltage can give you a burn. I recommend starting with a cheap red laser and working your way up.
Glad you are getting Ohm's law -- then the power law and then ---- Impedance / reactance !!!

oh i have ohms law the power law and even the ones you need when you only have power and resistance, but as far as the lasers go im hoping to get a he-ne in the next week or so

HeNe are nice lasers. Not powerful but a good beam.
Be careful. They run at voltages between 2,500 and 4,000 Volts. Very low current but they will sting you. Also, they hold a charge for a while after shut off. No bleeder resistors in them.
