Hello I am new to this forum. I work for a school district in South Dakota. We are going to build a burning diode laser for next month's science showcase. My quest is that I am looking for an old 164 type of argon laser. I can't afford much with this economy and all, but if anyone could help me acquire a working Spectra Physics 164 laser that puts out but don't have to be 100 percent 50 percent with high hours on tube would be fine. If anyone has one laying around and would like to help out a cause I would of course pay shipping and hopefully a great price for the laser. Plase let me know. Thanks Tom.

I would like to get this laser for the high school science class. Kids are showing an interest in lasers and eventhough I am a maintenance man there I am able to teach them in lasers. I would appreciate any help you can give

Good luck on that quest.

old argon lasers that have been sitting turned off forever are a bear to get working again.

we have a member here, Dave will chime in I'm sure, who can hook you up with a nice one for a few hundred bucks. (and his work!)

That depends on who made the laser, cyonics/jdsu, laserphysics and lexel almost always either start or they don't...

Sir, what specifically is your use for a 164? A 161 would be more appropriate...

I'm in a position where I can possibly help you, but I need to know more... The rules pretty much say 4.95 mW except under special circumstances... So I need to know who will supervise the safety...

I am wanting to show the science class about lasers and they are getting real interested. I have a 164 power supply and so that is why I was asking for a laser of that sort. I have the head but the tube was broken. I am going to have it set up in the high school science lab and the teacher is going to conduct the class on safety and what experiments they are going to conduct. I want them to have a laser that has some power. this school has 3 phase and power is not a problem. We have a laser engraver and we have a plasma cutter so kids here are used to using things that require maturity and understanding of things that are potentially dangerous if used in a non safe manner. I have decided to get a tube for my 164 and let the school use it. I can play with it here as well since we have 3 phase. I have a coherent CR 15 that I need a power supply for, I found a few wonderful companies that are willing to help me if I need them to. Axixs was very gracious and giving the school diode module cans (sans the diode so I don't have to extract them). and lenses. So the science class is building dvd laser based modules. I can tell you there are two companies to stay clear of one is in Ohio and one is in Connecticut! very greedy and useless. Scoob.

8A is the max rated current fot a 161B-070, any higher and the tube life drops from say 10000 hours to maybe 1000 hours.

be careful now, its a 161-x or 161-xx and the dash number determines power and wavelength, and a resistor in the head tells the PSU what max current is. For the most part, its 8 amps max for the small tubes..
