Nice, clean set-up.

When you say "yellowish" are you speaking of the plasma or the beam/spot?

Now that is a nice set-up!
Got to love the glow of the Helium Neons.
There is some good reading on Sam's laser site for all gas lasers and well worth the read.
http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/laserfaq.htm

Remember that the anode and cathode end will give you a ZAP if you touch them, and from what I read it is good to keep these tubes 'conditioned' by running them for a 1/2-1 hour at least per month.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Gas lasers and have fun:beer:

"Newer" HeNe's do not have this requirement. Hard-sealed HeNe tubes do not operate at the kinds of pressures that argons or kryptons do.

IINM, HeCd's need maintenance burns because of the added metal content

I differ to Dave's knowledge;)

Sam's lasers will be a good read though in learning more about these interesting lasers.
Dave is a great source for information as well as gas lasers for purchase.
Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your 'yellow' laser as well, you may have scored a nice little laser if so!

It's pretty obvious that the "yellowish" one is not 632nm. However, it is hard to tell in pictures on different monitors.

Would you describe it as golden (593nm) or orangish (612nm).

ColorScaleinnm.jpg

Which side of 600nm on the picture does it resemble more

In either case, you may have a treasure in that one

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** -- I just got a little excited ;)

There's a warning label on the second image of your post with the yellowish one in it - what wavelength is on it?

Those are pretty nice scores there.
If your ever thinking about parting with the yellow/orange Laser let me know! That would be a great one to add to my collection.
Either way, enjoy your new toy's:beer:

That one looks like an orange HeNe. That's the rarest of all the visible HeNe colors and the only one I don't have in my collection, I've never even seen one in person. That also appears to be one of the extremely rare metal/ceramic plasma tubes. You might drop Sam Goldwasser a note, I'm sure he'd love to have some pictures of that unit to put in the online gallery.

Yeah it's pretty rare to even find a working soft seal HeNe tube anymore. Everything switched to hard seal in the 80s, so nearly all of the soft seal tubes are ancient and long dead.

That was my first impression as well. I was hoping that he would compare to the picture without prejudice. Orange HeNe's are just too cool. Here is a shot at the last SoCaLEM

The orange is really even more striking in person.

I will keep my hopes up for Ben

Well, it depends on the camera. This is daguin's photo of my 594.1nm HeNe:

Based on how it looks in the photos and how the beam looks in the lower portion of Dave's photo, my money's on 594.1nm. :)

It's pretty easy to tell. Yellow HeNes are about the same color as the yellow light in a traffic signal. Orange ones are bright orange, like a neon indicator lamp.

I'd trade a working green HeNe for an orange one but have yet to find one available.

That's why I posted the color graph. Here is how my camera sees 612nm vs. 632nm

 I'd trade TWO working greens, with PSU's, for an orange
(maybe three ;) )

When you actually find one that does, I suspect it'll take a whole lot more than a 543.5nm HeNe. ;)
