Finally found a decently priced (and in good condition) PS brick that was DC to run this sucker. following a little advice on what to use to power it, finally went with a 12V 1.5A Wall Wart to run it. Its now up and lasing about 2.55mW or so of beautiful 632.8nm Red photons!

never you mind its stealthy 594.1nm big brother in the background...It'll get the spotlight soon enough....

now I just need to tackle the uniphase, its little sister in crime only takes 1KV @3.7mA....

I used a 75K ballast on it, bringing the tube up to about 1930V @ 6.5mA.
The divergence out the the mirror is actually fantastic on its own, so I doubt I'll be adding a lens to it. the bare output is a very clean round TEM00.

Its lasing  where is the beam

I love the glow of bare tubes

lol i'm taking other pictures. just taking my sweet time uploading them its on top of my book-case now, not my desk. I don't have a method of making fog in my room atm so I'm not able to do good beam shots

I was just teasing since it seems like the ONLY photos posted now are of high powered beam shots......nice to see the gas and exotic "beam shots"

haha yes, but very difficult to take a natural beam shot of a hene because the output is so low, and without having the white light well wash it out.

here it is with its new adopted little sister...a uniphase 098-0B that I picked up OEM brand new, still in the box and everything.

Ah was that the one posted in the "deals" thread and someone bid you up or was that a different person? I hope it wasnt someone on LPF if it was you. Thats just dirty and not cool. I hope to one day get into gas lasers but right now, diodes and handhelds are my game :)

was it in the deal section? i havent checked it. quite possible it was. it was almost mine for 30 bucks...but someone upped it to 67.50 trying to outdo me in the last 30 seconds. I quite like my gas, and considering these are worth many times that im not afraid to dish out a little extra cash for them at times. if it was someone on LPF i sincerely apologize. though unlike my MG its an internal component hene not a standalone, and is not really all that great by itself. this model uni has somewhat bad beam divergence and not the greatest starter hene. I like this P-122 though, i got it from chad for 60 bucks brand new, and it runs nice and cool, is polarized, and very stable, with a very good beam.

Just a neat fact to add.... This tube was 2.55mW when I got it, and I don't run it too often, but probably the most often of my gas, metered it again today and it has climbed to 2.92mW! :) truly was a new tube... I'm steadily seeing more power every day :) already almost up to 3mW...go lil HeNe go! :) not bad for a little linearly polarized tube at all!

Sorry for the slight necro.... But I wanted to share without starting a new thread just for this.

Omg necro pls ban.

But on a serious note, I had no idea hene's could increase in power from just sitting around. Im guessing its due to pressure changes?

Not from sitting, but from run time. New tubes sometimes get over filled and as you run new tubes, as they clean up the last contaminates the getter missed by operation and the pressure equalizes and the cathode breaks in, the power rises a bit. It's the sign of a very healthy tube :D
