Howdy all, I wanted to share my latest fleebay pick up. The LS 7000 handheld scanner. Not really much to say except that it has a small 1mW HeNe with brick PSU, and a pretty cool little scanner motor and mirror.

I haven't gotten it up and running yet, for some reason my usual logic is not working. Perhaps someone can shed some light on my problem.
The PSU has four wires coming out of it, Red, Black, Black/White, Yellow/White. I tried the black for negative and red for positive and my usually working 2.5A 6-12V walwart.(this works for my other two HeNe setups)
Perhaps I have the incorrect wires. I tried a continuity test with the black wire and it seems to go through to the black on the unit(you can see it in the photos)

Any ideas would be helpful.......(I have two more coming in the mail:eg:)

First up the PSU for photo explanation.

And now onto the unit.

I thought it was a nice design how the negative lead is brought by the rod on the left to the crimp around the tube.

These little units are pretty neat and have a very small HeNe for the collectors out there(....as long as you get it running)!

Thanks for lookin'

EDIT:
A few more photo's. I decided to take the housing off to take a look see inside.

you might need to short the yellow to ground or something like that...

or white/black to ground and white/yellow to 5VDC. but the white pair is probably control.

Thanks for the input, I just tried to combine the white/yellow with the black...nothing. I also tried the white/black with black and still nothing.
The tube seems to be in good condition, there isn't any burn on the inside from what I can see and everything else looks in good condition.

I like how the sticker depiction looks more like an explosion of goo than a laser dot.

LOL...I didn't notice that, it is pretty funny...Look out for that .95mW EXPLOSION OF COHERENT LIGHT!!

Still haven't gotten it fired up though, hard to say what is going on....I think perhaps the PSU is bad, or I haven't found the correct connection. I'v tried shorting the other wires and just hooking up the wallwart to the other wires. I'v tested continuity from the negative wire(black) to the negative lead on the tube and found a path, so I would think that the red is positive and black negative.
I'm running it at 6V, which works for my other small HeNe....No excitement in the tube though, not even a flicker.
This is all coming from a very non-scientific stance mind you.
I'll try to fire up the other two that I have coming, perhaps I just have a broken unit......

Thanks all for looking, this is a fun part of laser history....a cool little HeNe crammed into a hand-held unit.I'm always on the look for old (working!) lasers (of reasonable price)

Here you go. The black wire is ground. The red, white with yellow, gray go to positive. the white with black is capped off. I will post some pictures later of the two that I have.
Also 8-12 volt input.

Very cool, I'll give it a try. :thanks:

I'd love to see your scanner as well. Is it still in it's housing, or did you extract it like mine?

Edit: That did the trick! Thanks for the help!!
Edit2: Some picks of it up and running....the tube at least.

Can it pop a bal...

oh, nvm :)

I LOVE gadgets like these :)

Here's some pic's of mine.... I got one apart to change the ballast resistor. You can see how I did the switch. Also I flipped the tube around so it comes out the front. Then use a 8aa battery holder on top. I have had this for about 15 years and they still going strong.

That's a great set-up there! Yours seems very similar to mine. I don't have the grey wire from the PSU for some reason. I love the addition of the battery pack as well, I may try to do the same thing you did here with one of the others that I have coming. Have you gotten the scanning motor to work as well?

Got to love the HeNe's for their lasting power too....15 years! Thanks again for your help with the wiring.

I am glad I could help. As far as the scanning motor I think it's a stepper. Their should be a driver on the circuit board to run it? I have been thinking on running it with lipo's now, they did not exsits back in the day. Yup the tubes last a very long time. I built my first laser back in 1988 a metrologic 1/2 mw kit and she still running today.
