Tore apart a 1W Laser Physics Reliant for repair, thought I'd grab a couple pics while it's in pieces.

I'd say just a little bit of current has flowed thru that one connector on the board![/sarcasm]

Woah. Looks like a monster laser. What was it designed to do?

Probably "sewing" eyes back together. Making small incisions, and then closing them.

Anyway, how did that blow? These are generally pretty hardy beasts.

Designed to put out as much light as possible for a little air cooled compact gas lasers. I don't have a meter, but this one is putting out more than my other 1W Reliant, so likely around 1.2 to 1.5 I'd guess. Which is surprising for it's age.

I don't think it was a quick failure, I think that connector just melted over time, as it built up resistance it just began to break down to the point that it just stopped working. Surprisingly, the thing has nearly 4800 hours on it. Since I didn't have a replacement connector just like it, I had to improvise a bit!

This is the Ar/Kr beast?

Argon only, the Ar/Kr is the same size but only puts out around 300mW.

Path of least resistance is your friend. Not much can go wrong if it's directly connected like that.

Good work! Odd though that it just started acting up. I can't think of what would cause that after almost 5K hours.

DJZ, thank you for posting pics. I used the images to help me get an idea of what my reliant 1000M was supposed to look like.
I bought one recently, not working and after much cleaning, and re soldering, I powered it up and it runs.

Very nice repair job! Boy though, you went Insanity Wolf a bit there with identical insulated wire for all pins of that connector replacement!
