Ok, noob here with noob questions... What do you do with this type of laser?

Why not use a diode version at much higher powers?

Just curious about this aspect of laser hobbying.

Thanks,

For one. Direct green diodes only recently (within the last few months) became available. Secondly, the DG's are still >520nm where the green HeNe's are 543nm. The only other alternative is 532nm DPSS, which.. still looks different than 543nm.

Another thing is.. there's more to life than 'power' and 'burning'. Collecting rare wavelengths is more interesting to me than 'burning' with a 2W 445.

Burning is a neat "wow" factor thing but it is not what drew me to lasers, but brightness adds to the overall experience. Those are great points, but I was also wondering if stationary rigs offered neat prism/mirror opportunities or other interesting opportunities.

One thing you can't get from a diode based green laser or any diode laser for that matter is this:

2011-05-27_11-15-54pm by ltkernelpanic, on Flickr

The larger tube is a 543.5 green and the smaller is a 632.8 red HeNe. While I also have green and red tubes mounted in heads a big part of what drew me to HeNe lasers is the beauty of a bare tube in operation.

]i just love these tubes. with 14mw of red and 2mw of green i got a nice yellow spot.

easy - I've done the hard work for you hehe

Remove the image and re add it with this vbb code:

[I M G]http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/7614/1000062u.jpg[/I M G]

take the spaces out of the IMG tags first :)

Next time, copy the embed forum link to notepad, remove the fluff and just keep the bit with the img tags around it. That way you dont give imgshack free advertising :)

That green listing is wrong. The label says 0.47mW output. The PSU says 7mA output. The seller doesn't know the difference between mW and mA. I just spoke with LaserSam earlier about GreHeNes in the 5mA range and he said they typically do not exist.

The "hottest" one I've seen is about 3.3 mW. We have a couple at 3.1 or 3.2.
But they aren't cheap!

Purple elephants. :)

Oh, I do remember those. Edmund Scientific sold them in the late 80s, and yeah, they were $750. In the late 80s. Red diodes were $300 then too.

Indeed, times do change. Still kind of an interesting 'near he-ne pointer' and a green one at that...

I do believe GreeNes are getting scarce though... MG and JDSU only stopped making them a year or so ago. And I have verified, they only do 633nm now.

REO i'm not sure of. I know REO was still doing yellows, greens and reds 2 years ago, but i'm not sure right now.

I am thinking of grabbing that PMS Electro-Optics. What kind of PSU would I be looking at though?

Oo, that's nasty -.- What kind of current/voltage requirements do these have?

Alright, so I took the dive.

Hey Dave, you wouldn't happen to have any tiny, ~12V HeNe supplies for around 4.5mA and 1200V, would you?

The tube is a JDSU @~1.3mW
The PSU is a Power Tech brick
Input = 12VDC @ 3.5A
Output = 3600VDC @ 6.5mA

I do NOT have any small 1200 bricks on hand
I *think* I just saw some on eBay within the last couple of days
I'll run a quick check for you

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** -- Here ya go. Four of them for $30 shipped

Shame. A bit too large for my needs. I'm looking to make something really tiny... handheld, really ;)
