Default Re: HeNe power supply wiring connection woes..

Reading up on SamFAQ in regards to power supplies the voltex' are pretty good quality and often over looked.
However would this ps power a 1145P? I could keep an eye out for those large bricks but they don't pop up as often as the heads do.

no it wont. the 1145 needs a 4K+ supply. often at 7mA, despite it saying 6.5mA.

I messaged Sam to see what he had and he's going to take a look and get back to me. Haha Funny guy. Looks like he might just have the 1216-1. I'm really in for two bricks if I get this 594.1
MI hasn't returned back to me.

Sounds good. The lab supplies from uni aren't as nice as melles ones, but still quite good. Chad's been busy so it may take a bit for him to get back to you. If not I think I have a DC supply I can sell you with the yellow for perhaps 75-100 ish.

Default Re: HeNe power supply wiring connection woes..

FWIW I use this PSU from MI with my 1145p ad it works great.

https://www.mi-lasers.com/product/ac...to-25-heads-2/

It can put put 2700-3900 VDC at 5.5-7.0mA. The PSU JDSU recommends outputs 3800VDC@6.5mA so it's pretty much perfect.

PDF from JDSU showing the specs and what PSU to use with their tubes/heads.

http://www.jdsu.com/ProductLiteratur...0_ds_cl_ae.pdf

I honestly wouldn't buy a lab PSU unless you have a pile of money to burn or find a good deal because you can build one yourself with the proper brick and a few dollars in parts. The only thing I'm not sure how you'd do is make an emission LED if you wanted one. I may have to pop the one I got off ebay for cheap open and see how they did it in it.

Thanks for your input Ltkernalpanic. I'm still scoping out bricks, that one might work. Money is tight right now so I can't really afford a lab.
Question: I see some of these power supplies with ranges. 5.5-7mA and various voltage (24-3200VDC etc.) ranges. How are these modulated? I've see some mention a POT.
I know the tubes are pretty sturdy...

The uniphase ones are just a brick and fuse and small PCB connecting everything. The melles and voltex ones have noise canceling, and other features that make it more worth the money.

Default Re: HeNe power supply wiring connection woes..

Ok! I got options. What do you guys think?
Need to power REO-LHYR-0250M and 1135P
-Great, great, price on a voltex s28 lab style supply. 2400-3200VDC(too low for the 1135? Data sheet says 3100vdc but ultimatekaiser states the 1216 was higher)

Or 2 separate bricks: the original ps for the 1135p (1216)
And two, an Melles LPM-903 to power the 594.1. (This option is more money but I would have two bricks.)
Hmm decisions, decisions.

Default Re: HeNe power supply wiring connection woes..

the s-28 should be able to run both just fine as long as the 1135 is in good health. if it's looking aged, it might be slow to start.

the spec sheet for the 1135P says 3100V, but the 1216-1 that I used to have says 3K on the back @ 6.5mA.
the spec sheet for the 1145P says 3800V, and the 1218-1 supply says 3800 on the back @ 6.5mA (though they run better at 7 like the MG tubes of the same size)

but upside is if you buy both bricks for each the yellow and the uniphase then you can run both at the same time

edit: also, btw. i found a 12VDC laser drive brick @ 6mA in my closet that used to be used with the REO tubes I could let go of. it doesnt have the delay loop since its an OEM brick but is in otherwise good condition to my knowledge.

Bad news friends, my voltex s28 came in today and the JDSU 1135P does not fire, dOA. I haven't checked into deeply yet. I hooked my new uniphase 1674MP (543nm metered at 1.19mW!) up to it that laser head worked fine. Current was confirmed at 6.5mA.

Looks like I will HAVE to dissect it...Weekend project

That's what I hear, They use more potting. I have a tubing cutter and a saw blade that might work.
I'll let it sit, I left it on for about 45-50 seconds.

Actually rather than turning on and letting it sit on, which is hard on the supply, turn it on let it sit on for a couple of seconds then switch it off again. Retry a few times. If it's been sitting for a while it may take a while to start back up, as it's the fast large change in voltage you need.

Default Re: HeNe power supply wiring connection woes..

This makes me wanna get back into gas lasers lol. +1 on Voltex, I've had one before, good stuff. Search eBay for them, they pop up every so often.

I've never gotten MI to sell me anything at what I thought was a good price lol. All of their stuff has a markup, from HeNe's to misc parts to PS bricks. They wanted like $85 for a used PS brick for one of my greenies

Since the PS makes a big surge of power to start the HeNe, you want to turn it on and off if it doesn't fire up right away. Keeping the PS on startup power is stressful on the PS and doesn't really increase the chances of the tube firing up. It's pretty similar to trying to start up an Argon

I tried flipping the supply key off, pause, on, again. etc. nothing. I know it take a lot to kill these but the seller couldn't get the laser to fire either but he suppected it was the DC PS.

Edit: the shutter IS open. That's something I can picture myself forgetting.

Yeah, sounds like it's either dead, or the starting voltage has risen above normal from age, making the supply unable to strike an arc thru the gas. You could try it on a stronger supply in future. Depends on how much trouble you want to go through. My IR tube is like that. Operates at normal voltages, but the cold start voltage is higher than normal. Though after it lights once, it lights easy so long as it's still warm.
