Default Help hooking up my new HeNe

I purchased a Melles Griot 05-LHR-911

I also purchased a corresponding powersupply.

Now heres a pic of the tube. Which end is positive? I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to attach it where the rings are on the end...?

Any help would be appreciated.

The end with the metallic tube inside is usually the cathode
end and therefore the negative of the supply goes there..

Make sure you use a Ballast resistor in series with the PS and
Laser Tube (~50K to ~100k Ohms at 3-5 watts)

You attach the power to the metallic ends... DO NOT play with
the rings... they are used to align the end mirrors...

Yes, don't forget the resistor or it's likely the tube will go kaboom!

The power supply will probably go kaboom before the tube does. That said, make sure there is a resistor in there.

The positive output of the power supply is the thick red wire. Attach it to the anode, which is the end on the right in your picture.

I don't think those rings have anything to do with mirror alignment, but I would suggest you leave them alone anyways. Use clips to attach the wires.

They DO affect mirror alignment. I would recommend using these two contact points.

That IS what those rings are for. The allen screws on them sit over a "groove" in the metal end. By screwing them tighter you "move" the mirror. That's why they have sealant placed over the screws. Once the mirrors are aligned, you don't want the screws vibrating loose

Peace,
dave
