I am interested in getting one, and want to know the wavelength, the cost and the power :D

Wavelength: 543nm
Cost: >$2,000 new; <$150 used
Power: 0.1mW - 3mW

It's slightly yellower than a DPSS green. Here's a decent comparison.

What kind of battery? HeNe lasers draw a fair bit of current so if you're trying to power it with a 9v or something, it may not have enough juice to get it going.

2000V at 4mA would be 8W. I can see how a 9V would have trouble supplying that.

I am using a 12v lead acid battery. I tested the continuity between the red and black wires and they are shorting. The power supply is a 1000 volt 3-4mA

Please snap a picture of the power supply, you may be wiring it wrong. Some of these little HeNe power supplies have some weird color coding... like the red and black will go to + and a yellow or purple will go to -  (dont actually use that to determine what wires to use, it was just an example)

Post a pic of the PSU and I'll get you running in a jiffy

EDIT: Oh yeah, is this an actual power supply meant for a HeNe laser or is it just a generic 1kV 3-4mA PSU you had?

This is the power supply that came with the laser, it WAS working with the configuration the guy gave me, red+ yellow&white to positive and black to negative
Then, it just started shorting

ahh... if it WAS working then stopped, you have an issue somewhere. as far as I know those PSU's are potted on the inside so there's really no way to repair it, unless it's a short in the exposed wiring. Those little brick style PSU's are pretty easy to find though

Some of them are made for 12v and some are made for 5v.... Yours could have been a 5v model that was broken by applying the 12v for long periods of time.

BTW I REALLY wanted that laser... I had the high bid, and then he gave me a second chance offer but I decided I really shouldn't spend the money. Then he relisted it and I'm assuming you won  :p

Seriously though, if you ever decide you want to sell it, dont even post it as 'for sale' because it's already sold (to me.... lol)  :D

Red and yellow striped wire get 5V or 12V, use 12 if the tube don't light up. Black is common ground and fat red is HV+ out, it goes on the end with the smaller metal cap without the gas filling tube. The black and white stripe wire is an HV output signal.

thats a bit different then my set up. mine is a red laser tho. I bought a power supply from a company that has a specific end to it ($100). then wired it using using a AC adapter found in an electronic store($20). plugs right into the wall. has worked this way for over a year. but this thing is also 27 years old. a little bit different then the new ones.
