Hey guys,

Just a big +1 for Dave.... I purchased a Gree-Ne or green He-Ne laser plus PSU off him for a bargain in my books.

It took approx 2 weeks to get here, but Dave had it sent the next day after payment.

The laser is a 2.5mW green He-Ne with a 12V DC boost PSU. The PSU draws about 1.8A at 12V.

The outside of the box got damaged a bit in transit...

But that's ok, because it was so well wrapped inside nothing broke.

Once I put power to the PSU the current was active at 1mA, then in about 2-3 seconds jumped up to 1.5A then slowly climbed to 1.8A. I think this is a safety feature, because the laser turned straight on unlike my other He-Ne tube which sits there sparking for a while before lighting up.

Here is a "Beam shot"... I'll take a better one, once its dark here!

And I just love the beam profile... this was at about 7 meters away.

Planning on exposing the bare tube? :D

Im picking up a 2.5mW bare tube green from ebay... i would have loved to buy from Dave but I really want a bare tube, the red glow is epic.

Get some bare tubes Dave! Now!

Only one thing im concerned about and that is a cracked tube :/ Wouldn't be too nice to throw a 200 dollar tube in the trash.

$44 shipping priority isn't bad at all to aus when you consider the size of what was sent

Indeed, I paid about $180 in shipping for my argon laser from Dave! Shows how much lighter these HeNe tubes are .. especially their power supplies :p

haha, those argons weigh over 25 pounds!

After getting my first HeNe, I might get myself an argon :)

Does anyone know how easy it is for a bare HeNe tube to be cracked in shipping? I hope that the seller puts them in a solid tube along with foam.

Btw things, is there any point in getting a 40w Co2 tube?? :D

Burning will be fun I guess, until you put your hand in the way :eek:

I've managed to get my hand and fingernail in the way a few times (And I can't tell if the pain or smell is worse, ick!), and had a few really diffuse reflections heat up my face (I always, always wear goggles around it).

They're a lot of fun, so yes, they are worth it (Although I purchased it to use in my laser cutter mainly)

But you've gotta take safety a few levels up :)

If you are looking at the Meredith one on ebay. You can probably get for much less than the $200.00 and they shipped mine great as far as packing. Haven't had a HeNe break in shipping to me yet on a dozen of them. Of course I haven't had a SP 127 shipped to me (YET!)

Of course so does Dave (and everything I've got from him) and the Meredith one does not include a power supply.

Just an FYI. If you go with a high power red or an exotic, they are going to need a "special" power supply that can supply more juice than the average (5mw range) or cheapo (<1mw) ones. You're going to pay at least $40-50 for a DC one and an A/C will usually cost a pretty penny more. You need something like a 380T A/C power supply for the meredith one to operate correctly.

Dave's come with the PS so it's an awesome deal. Of course, you'll still need a wall wart for it.
