Keep in mind 3mA isn't enough current to light most high-mileage or larger tubes. It would be good for mabe 1 or 2mW red at most. The average HeNe likes 5mA, with greens and yellows liking closer to 7mA and up.

I was going to buy one of those and one of those $10 tubes from Sam but his site says they require 1200-1250VDC @ 4.5-5.5ma. Bummer.

That looks like a 5mA and up tube. It has the ballast resistor which is good, it's a bit of a bitch to guess and check the right value. Look for a 10kV start >1200V >4mA psu, that -may- be able to start it. If you didn't want to take a chance, find a >10kV start >1300V >6mA psu, that will definitely run it. 6.5mA is common on >7" tubes when fresh, and it won't hurt the tube if it needs less.

Get one while they last, those "homeless" tubes are a REAL gem! The Psu for them is cheap and easy to find, you just have to get the ballast value right: JDSU High Voltage Helium Neon HeNe Laser Power Supply 1250V DC 4.0mA HV 10KV | eBay I know it says 4.5 to 5.5mA on Sam's page but I've run one of his $10 homeless tubes on this exact psu for dozens of hours.

The one I linked above will run most tubes under 8" in length.

That's a neat looking tube. I have a couple of NEC's that I know nothing about as well. Looking forward to some pictures of your laser up and running.

It does happen sometime that they go for cheap but basically only when the seller doesn't know what they have. These psu's used to go for $150 not too long ago.

The PSU's in the link above are for these little 6 inch tubes

You can get these on eBay sometimes for pretty cheap.

Grab a PSU and keep your eye out for a little tube ;)

I have one of those. IIRC I paid ~$25 for tube, and PSU like the one linked.

I though the plasma would be brighter by all the picture I saw, but it was less than I expected.

DONE.!

You wouldn't by chance have one for sale Dave would you.

I'll buy one of those 6 inche ones in a heartbeat.:)

The only ones of these little 6-inchers I have on hand right now, do not produce a beam. :(

The plasma is good, so they are great for Steam Punk stuff and cool looking accent lamps, but no laser beam

I've got a couple of them in my FS thread for $20 (plus shipping) each , with a PSU
