First Argon! :D

Well my first Argon arrived today :D it's a Cyonics Uniphase 2201-40MLA multiline argon that is almost exactly as old as I am :D

I picked it up for $175 shipped off of eBay, the seller kindly diassembled the argon from a DNA sequencer. I just had to remove a few extra cables and get my remote pins jumpered. Preliminary testing shows a big box, lots of bubble wrap, heavy metal, excess cables to be removed, big&loud fan, a hot room, 6 lines, and 47mW output. A quick disassembly showed me what an argon laser tube looked like up close for the first time :p time to get a maintenance burn in :D

Just a couple shots:

Enjoy! Btw, can anyone tell me what these lines wavelengths are?

I hope my incoming ALC 60X just needs a zap by my incoming Oudin coil :p

Careful now, it's hard to stop buying these once you get started...

If I were a betting man: 514, 501nm, 496nm, 488nm, 476nm, and 457nm.

Someone who knows more can probably correct me though. ;)

Wish i could meter mine, but i, ya know....dont have a power meter...

anyway, you are getting the same 6 lines as me-thats on full power im assuming? also around 50mW is what im guessing mines putting out.

And Trevor i think you are correct...I have already been looking at HeNe's....but i would like to have this nice thing called "money" to use on other things other than just lasers! dropped a good 400$ on lasers in the past ~3 weeks...It's a sickness almost.

I can quit whenever i want, i swear!

Seems like those are the correct numbers :p and yes that's full power, I only have 5 lines at idle, which comes in at right around 4-5mW. And yes I know about "money", I have a GreeNe and an ALC 60X coming in. If I can revive the ALC 60X I'm good for argons, might even sell this little guy  I'm probably going to bare tube my GreeNe (I wanna see the plasma :eg:)

Nice. Wait till winter hits and you'll know why I've referred to mine as the "pretty blue space heater" on occasion.

Trevor is correct.

That feels like a waste of a post, so here is another decimal place: 514.5 501.7 496.5 488.0 476.5 457.9

Thanks for the info  and a side note... The PSU had a standard wall outlet plug :p

Good to hear.

Glad it was pretty much plug and play.

You worry too much (like me!)

Nice to know the wires aren't melting and it's putting out a nice pretty blue.

What do you think of 488?

Haha yeah I wasted money on a NEMA 5-15 to 5-20 adapter but oh well lol no wire melting problems :p although I do have to say, the PSU power cord is extremely short

488nm is such a pretty cyan! But I think the raw ML beam from the argon looks even cooler :p a sea green ish color. Very exotic

Both the ALC 60X and these JDSU 22xx lasers have a "light mode." This means, there is a built-in LPM (more or less) into the head. Those test points on the remote one measures with a DMM have always been pretty accurate, in my estimation.

On a JDSU 2214-40ML, I recently compared the actual light output with an LPM against the reading from the test points on my meter, and found the two readings to be within a few tenths a mW.

So, for these lasers, you don't need an LPM to get a pretty accurate approximation of what they're outputting.

Light-mode, test points, meter voltage.

And if you don't have a remote, get one. You know you've arrived if you can score one of these:

Eh, I don't feel the need to spend more on a remote for my laser than i spent in total for the laser itself :) Thanks for the info though-maybe if i ever see one for cheap on FleaBay I'll snag it
