Reason for the diy is price. It is also a good learning experience imo for a newb like me

I might just go with the zvs flyback circuit as it is a lot easier to hook up(not using massive cables) and is much smaller than making huge caps. Only problem is the fbt as It looks a bit harder to acquire.

Pump the flyback into the nst then voltage double it using the 2200pf caps

Flybacks are fairly easy to acquire. Look around *****ters at the local apartment buildings. People throw them out left and right around here.

Pumping the flyback into an NST unfortunately won't work. The 20kv+ at anywhere from 15- 150KHz into the primary of an NST that is meant to operate at 60Hz at 120V you might burn out the primary insulation.

Only thing with this circuit is I don't see where it could put out anywhere near 20kv. Maybe the fbt but the ones from computers don't go that high. Do you use a voltage multiplying circuit then?

If you use low turn counts on the primary for the ZVS you can get considerable more voltage output .

A single flyback was more than enough to start my 20W tube and honestly the voltage was a lot more than needed .

To much voltage and it arcs the water jacket ....

I would advise that what every rout you go down , get a DC Analogue current meter , It will be very useful in showing tube current , Just connect it between the tube cathode and power supply ground .

I use a 0-20mA one for my 20W tube , they do have 0-30mA I believe

1:Try the 12Kv NST unrectified
2:Try the 12Kv NST rectified
3: Locate a 15Kv NST ?
4: Try a ZVS
5: Try a Half Bridge ( complicated is )

Ok sounds doable. Probably going to sell a s6 that I polished for some more funds. :D

So to make an fbt to get the output of 20 kv from 20v I would wrap one wire for primary and 1000 for secondary?

It's not as simple as that unfortunately

Frequency and other factors will determine the volts per turns and you need proper insulation for HF

Just use a pre made DC flyback its a lot Easyer to work with

you don't need dead on 20Kv , around 16Kv + should be fine .

Don't try to make a flyback, it's an incredibly undertaking. Buy one ready made or salvage an old one.

Using a simple DIY driver of my design I've gotten over 74kVpk from a salvaged TV flyback running on 12V input.

Yep, though the ones with beefy cores and a lack of knobby-bits tend to work better.

I've been just using the original
primaries. I find the two pins that have
the highest inductance and that is the
primary. Two of the others will be the
feedback, or just another pin if the coils
are all in series. It takes a little
playing around to get it working just
right. The only drawback to doing it that
way is that it is somewhat finicky on the
input voltage. Not a problem though if you
have a variable supply.
