Is this a CO2 laser?

the gas fill system also sits beside the cathode area if I remember correctly.

The outer portion of the tube is 100% glass, this is where the water flows. Then there is an inner layer which is about 30% glass, and like diachi says under the magnet there is a BeO tube (so it goes magnet, glass, flowing water, BeO then argon plasma) so the Beo is completely surrounded by a glass water jacket. It really is insane how they got these things to last so long... but here it is, 20+ years later, and it still makes way over rated power.

solid state is nice... but it will never be as sexy....

I beg to differ :)

It's a white LED, he's shining a blue laser on it ( white LEDs are actually blue LEDs with a phosphor coating which emits green and red when the light from the blue LED strikes it, making white from RGB ) so with the blue laser it looks white.

Well it was pat that helped you tune it so well. I swear he could probably make a coke bottle lase if he wanted to. Just by looking at it.

They are pretty amazing pieces of engineering though, built to last, and last they do.

How many hours has that tube got on it anyway ?

He said mine is one of the nicest 168's he'd seen in a long time... thinks it will do 9W at full blast :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

I thought the anode end was the output in an ArIon. The cathode (hot emitter) is at the back on mine.
