I have been looking around for a cheap HeNe L.A.S.E.R. (pew pew) because they just look so freaking sweet! The unique colour and the glass tube lighting up... is just...

This kid said he got his for 20 bucks on ebay but everywhere i look they are pretty expensive (minimum 100 bucks). I didn't want to spend much money on it... well.. because i don't have that much money to spend. I was just looking for a regular hene like the one that kid has. Just about 632nm and about 0.5mW, so can i actually get one for $20?

Thanks and have a good one

Lets sell a kid of 14 a HeNe laser and then not mention that firing it at a camera (that is probably just in front of your eyes) isn't a great idea.

Waving it around while it is turned on like Grandpaws old shotgun isn't the best battle plan either.

I really despair when I see videos like this, I'm pretty sure that too much of it is going to end badly for those of us that actually do treat these things with the respect they deserve.
It's only going to take one muppet with a CO2 gas laser pointing it somewhere they shouldn't (oooo look it must be broken as I can't see the beam) and we will all find our hobby / work restricted by over zealous government agencies.

cheers

Dave

Just gotta keep your eyes peeled on places like eBay ;)

Keep in mind though, people in the US can't walk out their front door without tripping over awesome stuff. It's difficult to find stuff like this in Australia :(

I know a guy who scored a laserscope off eBay for $500. Yes, 40W of green for $500. You couldn't find a laserscope in Australia, at all :(

Yup :/ Same with Canada, all the nice stuff (old, huge, heavy PSU's) costs loads to ship :(

Well I have been checking ebay on HeNe and to be honest I still have to see a laser in tested condition that sells for $20.

Now you might get those (not tested sold as is) type of lasers for $20-30 but still it's a big risk and also you will need a PS to make it work.

I have to pick up my 2 HeNe I just bought, that will be tomorrow afternoon, but my cost of the lasers with the shipping and taxes was of $150 for two tubes and one PS...

Dave sells HeNe's, however I think the shipping from America might make it a bit too expensive, but it's worth asking.

$150 for 2 tubes and a PS is pretty ridiculous to tell you the truth.

The tube can be cheap, you could probably get one from Sam for pretty cheap, and a PS can be found on ebay for <$20. Though both combined, for $20...that's pretty hard to come by. Double your price to $40, or even $50, and you will have better luck.

If you're mixing and matching PSU to tube/head, make sure they will cooperate. If the tube only needs 3.6mA and you give it 6...that's not good. You will actually get LESS output than with 3.5mA, if anything. You will probably just get a purple glow with no dot.

Keeps your eyes open, and good luck!

I might have a tube around here that I wouldn't mind giving away. Though it's not a bare tube, and it has no more than a mW of output, but it's a good start. I won't be able to include the PSU because it's the same PSU for my 612nm. Though you're covering shipping.

Well could you post me a link of the $20 tubes you are talking about? Not one I have found at that price, also it depends on the tubes you are looking for....

You don't think his site has everything he has available; do you? Email him directly, and he can hook you up ;)

Type is irrelevant really. There are 4 factors really:

Age/use
Wavelenth
Output
Stabilized vs unstabilized

If you want a <1mW 633nm, you shouldn't pay more than $25-30 Seeing as you can get a 20mW 633 for $100 if you know the right people.

You want 543? Expect at least $100. 2mW? $150 ish. 3mW? $350+

594? $300+

Anything else? Pick an arm or leg ($500+ ish)

Stabilized? $1000+

Tunable? $3000+.

I think i will have to leave HeNe lasers until later on, they are pretty expensive and i still need to pay off some debt. Thanks for the offer bloom, but i don't have enough for a PSU. I think you should give it to someone who will use it because it will probably just sit here for a year. Thanks guys

Surplus, or from a seller who's liquidating old and arguably useless (to the mass majority) equipment? 1/10-1/20th of that cost.

Lurk on ebay, that's pretty much your only option.

I threw my hat in the ring, but sadly the auction you mentioned got sniped. I wanted it for laboratories but some hobbyists and new agey/steampunk collectors tend to bid very high so no bargain is found.
