Some used lasers have long run times when
resold. I believe that they do have a "useful
life" and your tube may be aged. Many simply
loose power slowly.

OMG -- My Lasos LGK is on ebay w/o PS for $1,500 !!!!!!!
What is going on? Looks like my $200 is way off.
HMike

LOL! Why did you think that they were scrambling, negotiating, and begging you to ship? ;)

Peace,

Thanks Dave ---
Guess I've lost track of laser stuff.
I've been doing some blacksmithing recently!
For $1,000+ I might find boxes!!!

There are some pretty optimistic people on eBay ;)
Much of that high priced stuff on eBay isn't even shown to work!

As you know, my pricing has usually been pretty low
I have one for $410, plus shipping

$200 for a working ML argon was a dream come true for the members here ;)

Peace,
dave

I know that on ebay, you can ask for anything
and get nothing. I was amazed at what the
dude is asking -- can he be that crazy?
I just fired up the Lasos - first "tick"!!
I'm looking for my gratings now -- The extra
two lines look to be a dirty CD.

A 500 Line/mm Grating still shows only 8 points.

If only I was going out west sometime soon, I'd nab it right up... but I already have two Argons to deal with :p

How can I tell how powerful my plasma ball is?

Power isn't the problem. You need lotsa volts
near the tube to ignite a plasma.
Most plasma balls have the HV wire going up the
center of the ball to a wad of steel wool.
Remove the ball and you will have a point emitter
for the volts. Be careful. Most are hot to ground.

If I attached metal to the surface of the glass orb, wouldn't electricity travel through the glass to the metal? It looks like the central rod is also covered in glass

UPDATE: my plasma ball lights up a fluorescent tube when the tube is around 1-2" away from the surface of the glass

The only other two lines in Ar would be 528nm or 454nm. So dirty disk :)

So what would I do to jumpstart the Argon using my plasma ball? Do I need to put the bare tube right next to the plasma ball and then power up my PSU (btw, turn the key first or flip the switch first)?

switch first, then key. switch is psu, key is laser. always PSU on first, the laser on, and laser off first, then PSU off.

Thanks for the info

Would a Van de Graff generator work by any chance? It produces a huge static charge instead of high frequency EM fields though... I'm no electronic engineering technician :p

Just as an aside. My Lasos I just bought I paid well under $200 and it runs 8 lines at idle and included the PS.

Might also be a difference because the ebay one is a 7890 dual line as opposed to a 7872, but not sure why that would matter a lot.

I don't see many of the Lasos argons around. Personally, I'd say $200 was a little cheap, but $300 would be more in the ballpark, just an FYI from my perspective.

The lasos is also a LOT pickier about igniting than some others. From all I've been reading it likes to run a little hotter than others and can be overcooled and then is hard to start, especially if running off the Cyonics PS. GooeyGus and Diane's laser page reported similar things about it.

My Cyonics 40MLA argons on the other hand are pretty solid for running, even if not started for a while

Yeah it seems Cyonics are pretty uncaring about maintenance burns and such, much less than other companies at least
