80W - C02 Buy.

Hello, I am wishing to buy a c02 laser. I have looked around and I thought My best bet is COLETECH on ebay but then I saw this:

New 80W co2 laser tube water cool with power supply | eBay

I would buy this as it comes with a water cooler but my problem is that the length of the tube does not seem to be the amount stated, I am wondering if it is realy 80W. Any guidence? And if anyone knows what other things I should buy with this also please say.

Yes it looks a lot shorter than 1.6m on the picture, the most likely explanation is that they use the same picture to represent the whole product range from 10-100W.

You will need goggles, and since the light is invisible anyway you can just as well get as high OD as possible.

^Regular polycarbonate safety glasses work fine.

Judging from the electrical specs, that is an 80W tube.

So Is that everything I need To set up a C02 Laser? Do I need some optics or somthing?

Not sure if this is the case with this tube, but CO2 tubes can be rather fragile - moreso than other gas lasers (not sure where I read that?).

Wonder if anyone's ordered one before? :undecided:

Depends on what you want to do with it?

You will definitely need a beam stopper, I have seen ceramic tile recommended a brick may do as well.

Yeah, My house is made from wood, could be a bad Idea. Also, how can you tell where there focal point is?

I guess you put something in the way of the beam, then measure the size of the hole/glowing spot.

The raw output of the tube will not have a focal point. The beam will be divergent. To get a focal point for burning and cutting, you will need a lens that will transmit the long wavelength light. Usually lenses for this purpose are made from zinc selenide - ZnSe

You will also need a compressed air and nozzle system to blow smoke and debris away from the lens if you plan on using it to cut material in a CNC type application.

Cinder blocks and firebrick make fine beam stops. It's pretty obvious where the beam is hitting as it'll be white hot within a few seconds.

Thanks guys, Sooo, do you think I should trust the guy in the link or does anyone have any other websites?. I hate how the postage costs are so high, but I suppose it needs to be.

Having shipped some large fragile items over to the UK from the US I can tell you there's no way around high postage costs unless you happen to be traveling back from there and can take it with you. I would trust the tube to be what they say it is, although I wouldn't expect it to last terribly long. The quality is really variable on a lot of Chinese goods but for an affordable sealed CO2 you don't have a lot of other choices.

Aren't these lasers all in China? I was only using US to UK as an example of shipping long distances overseas.

Yes there are UK sellers My 60 W came from a UK supplyer was a while ago though so look around they are out there .

Are you sure it comes with a cooling system? I don't see anything that says it comes with such a system. A self contained chiller would be very expensive.
