What is the BEST laser to mod?

I have wondered for a while what is the best laser to mod, and I have modified two I suggest as pretty good. I like the WL Core as it is reasonably cheap (I bought most of mine for ~ $38 including shipping expense, although these are likely to go up a little soon) and my total favorite the Galileo by LaserGlow. This unit has a front screw in assembly component, (contains most all of the laser except the battery and switch and body), when you unscrew it reveals the pot for super easy access! I have turned up some of them to ~ 55+ mW! (Now we can get them for ~ $60 to $65) Anyone who knows what can output more power and be easy to mod please DO tell! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Leadlights have a rep as being very stable under mod. Some leadlights (5mw) have ended up at 60mW ish. Try them.

yes, although most seem to be only able to get to about 30mw, there are a few cases where they have been modded up to 60mw but they will die in about a week while the power slowly decreases over that time because the crystals are being over-saturated.

Somone got it up to 60mw but every day it went down by 10mw until a few days later it died completely.

I got my leadlight up to 85mw. driven off 1 rcr123. It survived that for a few months slowly reducing in output power until I put in freshly recharged batteries 4.5v and killed it instantlly. It was my first nerfaser and was capable of easily burning electrical tape. I sent that to Senkat to have a new diode put in and it never did come back.

WOW your kidding right!?!?

Im suprised it lasted a whole month, wow and it would even cut thru electrical tape, man if only all of them went that high

No I'm not kidding! I wish I still had the internals on that thing! I'd replace the ktp into another functional laser!

Modding lasers is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Perhaps that Galileo can still handle it, but a lot of these portables are going the way of NewWish - using parts that just barely handle their power, if even that.

The leadlights were great for modding because they were made with the parts of a better laser, just tuned down to 5mW. Pushing every penny though, newer 5mWs aren't like that. Not sure where it went, but I once did a comparison of the WL Core's internals to a leadlight's. The crystal was much smaller and entirely unable to handle modding.

So are the new leadlights, like the one senkat sells still good for modding or are there now cheaper crystals in them and not as good quality as they used to be.

I've been told by pseudo that those leadlights have been sitting in a warehouse for some time so it's possible those are still the good old one's. Greg's have led indicators on the outside so they are glp-110's or newer. the glp-105's were the sweet to modify one's.

I can't suggest modding any laser, but SenKat got those leadlights from me. I don't think Leadlight has changed anything, but in any case those aren't new leadlights. They were made a long while ago and have just been sitting around in storage since then.

Ya, know that's ok though. I'm no longer interested in modifying lasers like these leadlights. I like to keep my lasers in pristine condition and no matter how good you are at modifying your going to bugger it up somewhere. Donno why asthetics is soo important to me. Maybe it's from me coming from lower class, wanting to be upper class and striving to get the best of everything I can get my hands on.
