HI, I KNOW ITS OVERKILL but can anyone help me figure out what size and how manny resistors to use if i were to put the axis module and the burner diode into this size of flashlight.

i have the recomended capacitor and i bought the multi pack with 100 resistors so i just need to match em right.

or can i get a reostat and adjust safely with that?

thank you for your help

If I were you - since there is PLENTY of room in that torch - build the LM317 circuit, and house it in the head of the light ! If all you want to do is use resistors, then measure the current coming off of hte batteries...

Unfortunately, three batteries does not supply enough voltage for the LM317 circuit.

I would suggest getting the 3 watt 25 ohm rheostat from Radio Shack. The amount of resistance also depends on if you are using nimh or alkaline batteries. With the rheostat, you can use it to adjust the amount of current going to the diode until you reach however much current you want to apply to it. Then measure across the rheostat using an ohm meter. This will tell you the resistance you need. I think you will need a 2 watt resistor.

thanks i wanna try and do dadels driver. is it compatible with the d cells?
it should be 4.5 v its the amperage im worried about

You need at the very minimum 6 volts for Daedal's circuit to operate correctly. The LM317 is very inefficient and has a voltage drop of 2 volts.

Running off 3 cells is a tricky thing. If you use the GB sony diode, you will have very little voltage to regulate with. At full power (say close to 200 mA), the voltage drop accross the diode is almost 3.0 volts, leaving you only 0.6 volts to work with in case of NiMH's. It can probably be done, but you'll need a fair amount of electronics skills and experience to pull it off.

If you want to use a maglite, get a 4 cell version. In a 4D there is plenty of space to build all kinds of regulators, and enough voltage to work out decent circuitry.

A mag 3 or 4D is quite a hefty body for a laser though... i think such maglites make better batons than light sources, and that's probably the reason they sell quite well ;)

thanks guys. ill probably stick to a 1 watt 2 cell aa
i just got my ld in the mail today along with the housing.
i fired it up straight off the batt's and it worked greate!
i then ran a cap parallel and a 10 ohm resistor in series and it would not burn black tape although it was pretty bright. can i safely run a 2.2 ohm resistor ??

Yes..that will give appx. 160ma's to the diode using alkaline batteries, and it will burn.

COOL, i need to find a housing that will hold all this crap or go find a dorcy jr. and mod it out.
