Thought I might start a thread of unusual DIY laser cases.
Actually I thought this might be the oddest for a while, but I just saw Phazonx's lantern  ;D

Anyway, in keeping with the violet theme of the Blu-Ray diodes, here's the enclosure I'm using at least till something better comes along.  (Was an Ice Breakers mint tin.)

I have a bout 20 of these and thought some people might be interested in them to host their next laser project.
I'm currently working on building one using a Meridith LD module http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/sh...hstart=0&template=Templates/SearchResult.html
It might be awhile before its finished but its definitely not your normal laser case :).

These are rechargeable flashlights that plugged directly into a cigar lighter 12v to charge.
Include a very small LED indicator that shows through the front bottom of the flashlight.
Brand new, Yet made many years ago and have just been sitting.
The batteries are probably junk. But there is enough room for different size batteries and electronics.

Heres a few pics:

I don't know if this is unusual.. I used it, cos it's small and has a nice shape.. It's originally meant for building small (garage?) door opener remotes..

It's very small (74 x 44 x 18mm), powered by a small hobby grade LiPo and some basic protection circuitry and has a 16x DVD LD inside, eating up 280mA (when the LiPo is full).

I wanted a small laser with burning capabilities and i got it..

Zarniwoop: Our lense appertures look very similiar...

Ah.. oddball laser cases. Here is the sort-of alpha version of my portable design. The case is for daily contact lenses, came free with an order of those.

And here is how alpha it actually is. Features duct tape, 3 hardwired AA batteries, and things put in places without even considering practicality... it works fine though, with controllable current from 0 to 220 mA or so.

Larger than a lighter, but it works fine if you need to light up a cig ;)

Probably not really odd or unusual, but different. Check out the fiber optic cable lighting from the LED...
(waiting on module)

My first is on another thread... this one's another quickie, much bigger but runs for hours.

PVC Blu-Ray

1/2" PVC tubing and fittings. The tape is temporary, awaiting the purchase of some large heat-shrink. The front end is protectable by screwing on a gasketed endcap. Once it's wrapped up, with the front end cap it should be waterproof and fairly rugged.

Blu-Ray in a housing from Senkat; 2-transistor current regulation using surface-mount components on a little board behind the housing; controlled by a Photon Micro-light controller (the oval bulge under the front tape). Powered by two cr123 rechargeables.

Well this thread is living up to what I'd hoped - Some creative stuff there  [smiley=lolk.gif]

I started to make a PVC case for the BluRay, but to make it wide enough to hold the 9V I wanted to use it ended up so big it was just silly looking. With the end-caps on it looked like a giant Tylenol capsule.

oops... didn't think about how it'd look in these times of homeland insecurity :-/
- now there's two reasons I gotta stay away from airports!
"really, officer, it's not a bomb, it's just a laser"
good thing I didn't use galvanized steel pipe for better heatsinking :D

Zarni - "giant Tylenol capsule" - thats great! probably easier to get through the security line...

So just where does that "giant Tylenol capsule" go in order to get through security?

HAHA that's great! If there was an award for the best laser case that one would win!

For a blast from the past, here's one from my Helium-Neon days.
(It's pathetic now to dig these out and see that for all their size and complexity the beam is dimmer than a cat-toy laser I can buy for 3 bucks now!)
This one is the smallest HeNe I ever put together, with a "miniature tube", in an auto timing-light case:

I like the HeNe too... it does look like a serious weapon like that :)
