Tripod Mount for Laserglow Hercules

I stopped by a lowes today to pick up a 1/4-20 UNC tap for a guy in france who wants to be able to tap tripod mount holes in aluminum for some of his laser projects. I'm sure you could tap a mounting hole through a Herc with the right equipment

I made a tripod holder "knockoff" of the one that CTALMADG had machined. (Although it has no pistolgrip...)

Home Depot has "Grounding Clamps" that accept the mounting screw from the standard $5 cheapo tripods. 1 1/4" for $1.99 (part# 05141161101 at my local Home Depot)
I just lined the teeth of the clamp with some shelving padding and superglue.

Voila - cheap, sturdy clamp with no machining. It will accept Aries sized and smaller lasers just by screwing it down.

**update** I just superglued dimes into the screwdriver slots on the screws. (I would have replaced them with thumbscrews, but the end of the screws is "stripped" by the manufacturer to make the screws stay in the clamp.)

Just a thought but maybe you could use a quick release bicycle seatpost bolt, so you can remove and replace the laser from the clamp without any tools. That would be awesome!!!

I'm also making a PVC tripod adaptor that will probably work just as well - for under $5 and 15 minutes of time (in addition to letting the glue dry...)

It is a little more user friendly since the laser just snaps in and out, but less stable.

This is a clamp I'm making from PVC "Saddles" (found in the "buried sprinkler" area of Home Depot) I have sizes ranging from 1" to 1/2" and they all use a common 1/2" thread at the bottom. I also used a 1/2" PVC plug and glued in a 1/4" nut that fit the thread of the tripod. As small piece of shelving liner was cut to ensure the lasers will fit snugly.

I wish. I had to send Greg a bunch of laser parts and diodes because I couldn't get them to work without destroying them. I'm better at fixing people than lasers...

thats a good idea stevetexas, sounds like exactly what i need. I had thought of using a maglight clamp, but im sure this will work just as easy.

just curious how its less stable? it seems like it would be a nice tight fit.

Actually, I don't know yet - still waiting for the gorilla glue to dry. I suspect the PVC one will be the one I use 99% of the time. Truthfully, the tripod is probably the weakest part.
