In the electronics hobby, we call that starting a "junk box". That's a good term ;D I have tons of "junk" which come in handy all the time.
The 7812 and 7805 are 12 volt and 5 volt regulators.

How do you take the caps off, when i pull them the leads always just come out.
I need to take all the voltage regulators out of a ups (uninteruptable power supply), its like for a computer so you can use it when the power goes out, i would guess it has around 25 of them in there, plus some ones that are like 1inch square, those are biggg regulators.

Wweeelll -- I unsolder them to remove from the board. Sometimes a solder sucker helps. Yes, That's a real tool.
All that "stuff" in the uninteruptable power supply may not be regulators. There's probably transistors and BIG MosFet's in there. You have to research the part numbers.

Duh... i cant belive i didnt think of that, just melt the solder and take em out... its always the simple things i never seem to think of..

I did some searching and found an old canon printer external power supply.
I got a bevy of useful components out of this.
120uf 400v capacitor
(2) 330uf 25v capacitor
47uf 35v capacitor
47uf 16v capacitor
100uf 10v capacitor
10uf 50v capacitor
1 uf 50 v capacitor
(2) potentiometers
LM317T
(3) switches
(14) 10ohm 1/4 watt resistors
(5) silicone diodes
Green LED
Red LED
(2) White LED
(3) Unknown item A
(8) Unknown item B

the first ones are transistors, the second ones are capacitors, they are a different type, can handle high voltage but dont hold much at all.
And i dont know what the third is.

I dont really know what they do in detail, i think it has something to do with amplyfing things, like in guitar amps, may be way off here didnt realy want to read all that.

wow. um. you removed all those parts from that board just by pulling, without heat??? i'm surprised that many survived. my usual technique is with a soldering iron too. for parts with a lot of legs i heat as many joints as possible at once, while rocking it back and forth to lift the melted joints a fraction at a time, then melting the other ones, wiggle, melt, wiggle, melt, etc.

btw a transistor is a solid state switching device that has a base, collector and emitter. don't know more than that, i'm good with electronics but never 'got' transistors.
