Default So, killed my 5th dvd rw diode

my fifth dvd rewriter 18x and 20x diode has just died

1st diode- Over powered and then pins broken off

2nd Diode- pins got twisted and i touched the mirrors with a wire and it lighted up woot. But was connected directly to batts so it died

3rd diode- died coz it was directly connected to batts.

4th diode- either died coz of heat or the window broke and disconnected the pins inside

5th- really nice diode from lg which didnt even die when it was overheated whilst soldering, BUT died coz the pin got twisted.
toched with a solder wire and it lighted up but got shorted and ZAP. died.
LOL
:'(

so thats my story. by the way the overpowered two diodes were connected directly to batts coz of my ignorance, when i was really new to lasers.
the other werent really my fault actually, just the fact that i kept opening them up and taking them out again and again so the pins must have broke

well, sh*t happens.

that is why when you've got it fixed and put together don't take it apart again. "if it aint broke don't fix it." Ya learn.

lol
yeah i sort wouldve done that but the thing was that
3 of them died before being put together into the aixiz housing and two of them werent securely into the battery so the pins came loose.

so basically when i have my new diodes, im not gonna put anything together until i have everything i need from a-z then i can just put it together all at once

I managed to recover one LD with broken pins yesterday. It just took a lot of effort to solder to the tiny surface left. After that i put a big blob of epoxy glue on it so it doesn't come loose.

It is always good to mount your LD in the module before playing with it for the following reasons.
1) easier to handle without touching aperture
2) heat sinking effect of module when soldering (I still use clips attached to sink heat as well).
3) it gives mechanical support to the wires making it less likely that LD pins will be strained (all mine have a diode and cap in the module with shrink sleeve over them to ensure nothing touches the case, I also finish with a dab of silicone sealant to keep things in place).

@izzy It is good that you posted this, you have learned from your experience and you will save others from making the same mistakes if they read the thread.
Let's hope your next attempt works out for you

As was mentioned, you can recover a LD with broken pins and a broken front window.

thnx for that but the window actually broke and fell inside. it lighted up but after some work it didnt so i assumed it was either heat, or the window glass broke the tiny pins inside

also the other things about fixing broken pins, the tiny tiny tiny wires inside from the + broke and i woudve fixed it but when i touched it with the wire to actually see if it still was working, it shorted and died.

well im trying to forget about it and try to take things as if nothing happened but the onl drawback is that i cant. :P

How long did your 3rd diode last before it burned out? I've been running direct off batteries for a couple weeks and all is well for the moment... I'm using the GB diode.
