Searching info about Samsung super writemaster 18x red diode

Hi

Let me premise, i searched for a week in google and producers sites, and found nothing, and also in the forum there's nothing i can find with search function, so i'm asking here.

Anyone already got one of the Samsung super-writemaster 18x dvd burner diodes, and got somewhere tech spec ?

The diode is not a metal can, is a "strange" (apparently non-standard 4 pins flatpack open LD) case, glued with thermoconductive resin up and down the diode, inside a small aluminium holder ..... 2 pins are the LD ones, one probably the return photodiode, one unused, but there's no way at all for get any part numbers due to the resin.

I tried it, and apparently have a threshold (start to lase) at 47mA ..... powered with 75ma, it go half hour without significantly increase the temp ..... driving it with 98mA, focused, it start to smoke black plastic a bit and become more hot (60 seconds turn it 10/11 degrees more than the start point)

I have this one from a while, and decided to mount it on an old aixiz module for focusing tests, and for better handling it, so modified the aixiz head with a scissor (don't look me bad, it's just soft brass), til the aluminium block fit in the better position and completely in contact, then solded a pair of copper wires on the head, put the module in place, bended the wires on corners for keep it fixed, then glued it with self-made thermoconductive resin.

You can see what i mean in the pics, hope it's clear :)

But now i want to know if there's any way for get the right data for this damn LD, working current, max safe power, and so on ..... anyone have these data and can share, or any link to a datasheet ?

that samsung diode looks kinda goofy... if the module gets hot in that short of time, I'd definitely get a heatsink for it. Some new guy back in the tutorials forums is working with a samsung diode as well, but I'm pretty sure there's not very much about them here on the forum since we typically use 5.6mm diode cans for this application. They are much easier to work with when compared to all the work you've had to do on this one. Do a search on the forum for the LPC-815 Long Open Can (LOC) diode.. You might have a lot more resources available to you on that diode instead..

I know, in fact it was a damn PITA :) just joining it to the aixiz head ..... i was searching a way for use it, cause, after all, it was mounted in a 18x dvd burner, so i'm still hoping that it can worth the effort for make an experiment (a pocket-size red/violet pointer, in fact :)) with 150 mW violet and (maybe ?) 150/200 mW red :evil: ..... anyway, you're right, i found nothing about it in a week of search, also the "package type" seem not standard ..... i've found datasheets about some laser diodes in flatpack, with and without the heatsink flaps, but only with 3 leads, none with 4 like this one :banghead:.

I know they are different, but a 5.6mm 18x diode can run at 400ma+ for a while. Maybe if you set it at 300mA and see?

its still worth a shot i suppose, seeing as you've already got an aixis module attached to it!

Thanks, then i try with 300mA, and a thermic probe on the diode assembly for the test (just for safety :)) ..... anyway, using it in a pointer, where usually go on for very few time, i suppose it can be ok.

I suppose that can push out 200/ 250 mW, maybe staying on 200, for safety range and long life ..... still can't measure the effective power, i had an old power meter, now dead, and i'm still trying to build a new one, but no luck in finding thermopile cells without glass can (some years ago they was everywhere, now i can't find one also in electronic fairs, damn :p)

By the way, together this, was another closed can diode, the IR one for cd burning ..... is without any part number, also if is a common 5.6mm closed can ..... originally, the cd part was a 48/52x, what can be the safe range for the IR one, also indicatively ?

Sorry for being so boring with all my questions, but when i have no data at all, i prefer ask first, than just see burned diodes after :D

The IR one is 790nm IIRC. I think you can get around 200mW out of them at ~250mA

Edit: just made a pair of quick tests.

Tried at 250 mA, focused at 1,5 meters on a little piece of black cable, start to smoke immediately ..... i left it on for 60 seconds, it melted a little bit te gum but not passed through, and the assembly passed from 34 to 42 °C (ambient temp here today is 34 °C)

Then i left it cool down, and tried with 300 mA, focusing it at 15 cm from the cable ..... much more smoke, i left it again 60 seconds, it melted a lot more and started to see a bit of light from back the gum, but had to turn it off quickly, cause in just 60 seconds it passed from 34 to 57 °C

Anyway, it was not burning plastic, it was burning 1 mm of high temp self-extinguishing gum of a machine cable, so i think isn't too bad, after all :D

The only bad part is that it's almost impossible to focus it completely good, at least not with this aixiz glass lens i have, it left a dimmed circle around the spot, and when i focus it at low power, there's something like a "bar" of dimed light, also if the chip looks focused, as in the pic (just after threshold, focused at 1.5 meters)

and increasing the current (150 mA, same distance), focusing for the smallest dot possible, it do a dimmed circle of 10/11 mm too (i had to filter this, cause the webcam go in saturation, otherwise, but the dimmed part is still visible)

only de-focusing it a bit (enlarging the dot to 2.5 / 3mm) the dimmed circle disappear, and don't know why ..... maybe i have to try with different lenses, also if i thought that an aixiz glass module was good :confused:

Ok, if someone other have them and need those info, i found something from my tests ..... driving it at 250mA is safe enough, but need heatsink for operate over 15/20 seconds, otherwise the diode temp rise and the current go in increasing loop (avalanche effect), anyway at 250mA it give something like 180mW ..... used it for short times at 290mA, it give almost 200mW, but not risked more, cause the lack of informations, and at this current, temperature increase very quick also with a passive heatsink.

I put the assembly on an active heatsink, and runned it at 250mA for 30 minutes, and it's not died :p , but with the TEC keeping it under 30 C ..... i don't suggest that with a passive cooler, anyway :D

I have a Super Writemaster too.
Mine is model SH-S223Q/BEBN and it's rated at 22x.

Mine also had a vierd package/thermal solution and I dremeled it to fit in a focusable fixture. So far I haven't attached it permanently and thermally though and have run it for a few mins at a time up to 227 mA.
