yes it is a pad for a sot-223, and ill have to look into that chip you mentioned. im glad to see so many people are interested!

hahah ok ok that makes sense now. and yes that is what it is

im thinking hot, i heard they got cold to work somewhere with a pyroelectric crystal suspended in some liquid, but it wasnt economical, and i figure that we should at least start with something that nature can reproduce...

i was looking at that MC33269 and i just glanced at it but basically its the same exact thing but with a lower voltage drop of only about two volts right? it seems to have the same Vref of 1.25 volts on the adj pin. it seems like it would work well, am i reading this right that blu-rays run at about 5 volts? what do greens run at? i would really like to be able to use this circuit for driving any type of laser diode, just by swapping out the components

also, if i bought all of these things, would you guys want them with parts in a bag? parts soldered on? im thinking i dont really wanna do that much soldering, as much as i like it... let me know

The regulator is 1V dropout (plus the 1.25V across the sense resistor). It cuts the required headroom by around 1.5V over a LM317. I've built a few boards on the SO-8 package. Cheers,

Don't bother about greens, there are no green diodes that would fit in aixiz modules anyway, blu-ray and red are the common ones. IIRC blu-ray runs at around 4.2V, and the reds run at 2.5-3V. If you can get this going for the right price, i would be in for a few. As for the soldering, maybe you could send them ina little bag with the boards, and we assemble them ourselves, or if someone is crap at SMT work, you could charge a little extra for assembly?

There are MAJOR problems with this.

The chip I settled on was decided on after LONG series of consideration. Problems with that SOT-223 LM317 were both voltage drop and HEAT. I am using the chip that I am using, because of HEAT. We found that most chips in that package could not withstand the heat they generate, even at 200mA.

That other chip will allow lower drop, but the heat is still an issue.

The next revision of my board will almost certainly be about a quarter of the size, maybe slightly more expensive, but tiny.

blue i like the idea of tiny, but detest the "more expensive". heat not really being an issue for me, if this guy's drivers are cheaper than yours, and they drive, then im ggetting this.

this is the way i would like to see this done best of all:

i care nothing for profit, i just want a few for myself. that being said pad2pad, the company i plan on having the board made with, has a program that you download for free and draw the board on. this program then computes the price of the board, and because its just an algorithm doing it, i'd be skeptical that its the actual price that it would come out being. anyways, it says its 128.80 for 200 boards, or 64 cents each. i also really dont want to deal with soldering, buying tons of SMT components, or shipping, so i would prefer to hand the whole batch off to someone else (after i prove that it works of course.) they (stonetek maybe?) could then sell the boards for what they want, and i REALLY want it to be stonetek so they charge a fair price. (why does it say GL senkat at the top of the forum, did he leave or something?) anyways then people could buy the boards from senkat, and all the parts can be gotten from newark for:

MC33269 = $.455
capacitor = $.688
resistor = $.691
diode = $.102

that comes to about 2.576 dollars without shipping, assuming that no ones charging for labor. cheap enough?

let me know what you guys think about this, ill ask senkat.

My issue with heat is not the dissipation, but that the component itself generates so much heat that it melts itself. So this is not just a point to be noted, but a serious issue to be looked at before you go investing $400.

And senkat is off for surgery (yesterday?) on his back, so we're not expecting him on for a while.

One more thing, by more expensive I only mean a few cents. I doubt that my drivers will ever blow past $5. (total)

I am partial to the AMC7135 on account it has a very low dropout voltage..as in millivolts.. If you didn't see my thread for them here it is:

I don't think many of us here are able to solder SMT components very well. So FTIF's board is out of the question unless someone has a reflow solder machine in his basement.

im taking a class at school, intro to digital electronics, its meant as a first class for the field, so you dont need any prior knowledge about anything electronic, and they had us make a board with some surface mount components on it. the instructor didnt really teach us how to do it at all, just had us look in the instruction book that came with the board. everyone got it without problems, and i dont know what a reflow machine is but i know we didnt use one. just soldering pens.

SMT work is really a lot easier than most people seem to think. Just get a decent iron, some fine solder, and ALWAYS use flux (but only a tiny amount)

Yes, a reflow station would do a few of these boards in a single shot; but no, it's not needed.

a_pyro_is has been talking to me about this, and he's convinced me to change the layout a bit again, im going to attempt to move the capacitor and diode to the other side of the board, and put in room for a second resistor in series so that we could get a larger range of ohm ratings, and then well be able to use smaller half watt resistors.
@amkdeath those cad drawings are to scale, and the components on the board are drawn at their maximum possible dimensions according to the datasheets. the new resistors will be even smaller, so there really shouldnt be a problem with fitting the board in the 12x30 mm aixiz housing. (i really wish they had a better website, its such a piece of shit.)
