Hi All.

I just took several mice apart to get some pcb boards for redesigning.
Then i saw these photo diodes from the tackwheels.

Maybe i could get a reading from them connecting them to a multimeter.

I just tested them for resistence and my 100mW bluray pin-focused into the middle of the
diode left some marks but didn't melt it down.

I will hook this up when i'm back from work.

Photodiodes in mouses sensors are matched for IR range ..... other than this, i fear that, shining a 100mW (or also less) focused on a photodiode, you burn it.

Different can be if you build a reading chamber (mean, as example, a closed cylinder, with a diffusion glass at one end, and the diode at the other, so the diode can read the light that come in through the window, without become burned or saturated from the too much high flux.

But keep in mind, in this way, you basically read the luminous flux, not directly the heating power ..... and also, photodiodes are NOT linear, in spectral sensitivity ..... the same power at different wavelenghts, gives you different readings, so you need a correction chart, too.
