Default open can?

Can someone explain to me what an open can is? Pictures would help also comparing a open can to a regular diode. Thanks!

do a search on that page for open-cavity

looks just like your avatar except no glass or the silver metal

The open can diodes we are harvesting from DVD burners look like the one in the following picture. Credit for the photo goes to VaThink and he convinced me to give the open can diodes a try. And I sure as hell am happy with them.. ;D

Are most or all of the harvested open cans the same 5.6mm package size as the standard diodes? I guess C-mounts are a special case though.

As long as the diode in the DVD burner isn't one of the weird ones, the open can is exactly the same size as a closed can. I don't know of any DVD burners that use c-mount diodes.

I don't know...I would spend the extra $5.00 and get this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827129018

I think the chances of it having an open can diode are better because the 18X Pioneer had one. But no guarantees. I will be ordering on in a couple of weeks and will let everyone know.

I tell ya what, you try that one and I'll try the Samsung. Then we'll know what they both have. Monday's payday.

Just to let you know the Pioneer is on order. As you probably know Newegg is fast and the drive should be here Wednesday or Thursday. If your drive and my drive are both open cans, one way to tell if they are the same is to drive them both with the same amount of current, and measure the voltage across the diode. This is not a 100% guarantee they will both be the same, but it is an indication. My 112D diode is running with 350ma's. The voltage across the diode is 2.8 volts. So if the new Pioneer 20X is an open can, you can bet I will be comparing the two both electrically, and measuring the output as well. Keeping my fingers and nuts crossed.. ;D

Well I got my Samsung on order too. I think it usually takes 2 days to ship to me, so yea, probably Wednesday. I'll have to piggyback a resistor in my driver to get it above 255ma. I think I'll also need a heat sink too.

Sounds good. I can match whatever current you come up with. Just let me know what it is and then we can compare the voltages. You are mounting it in a module right? This will provide enough heatsinking for short duty cycles.

Yea, I'll be mounting into the AixiZ module & maybe the body too for an extra heat sink. But the heat sink I was referring to earlier would be for my driver. Since anything over 100ma seems to warm up the vreg. I haven't yet gone over 180ma, so I'll be really gun shy with this thing. I'm gonna feel like I'm killing it @ 250ma.

Oh... I understand now. Well the lower the voltage you apply to the regulator, the lower the heat. But as you know you don't want to go below 6 volts. Mine gets hot too with 7.5 volts. I have a little clip on heatsink that was made for the TO-220 case. Fortunately the regulator has thermal protection built in and I know it works..lol. I applied 12 volts to mine when I was running my open can with 600ma's, and when the thermal protection kicked in the current started to drop. This was after having it on for a minute or two. But between 6 and 9 volts, it was ok.
