Well, good gentle me damaged another little diode here. This time its a SFAW210. When harvesting it I managed to break the little window in front, I have no clue how I did, as I did everything correctly, but, I did. I just pushed it in a tiny bit into an aixiz and tested it at 170ma, and it was still working, just not properly shining light (obviously). Anyway, since broken, it was nearly garbage anyway, so I put it in the vice, and cut it open with various tools. Now, with the hole bigger, I just shook the broken glass out. Now it is officially an open can 405nm laser diode! :D

But, does it work after all of that surgery? It sure does!

LOL, nice decanning

Im not sure if these diodes contain a special type of gas but to be sure, leave it in an aixiz module with teflon around the lens to keep it airtight just in case the oxygen degrades the die...

LOL what did you do bite it off. Just kidding, nice save.
Once you get the lens on and it works leave it on. Like LaZeRz said oxygen might degrade the dye. If not, dust can kill it also.

I did the same with a 12X diode that had the window broke and it worked great at first but over a couple of months it degraded until it finally went LED. And I did keep the lens in all the time.:(

That sucks,
was that some time ago, when 12x diodes cost $170+:(

Nice to see its still emitting some light (looking from the pictures).

Ive had that happen once to a PHR, it survived the experience like yours and still emitted light, but it was no longer a coherent emittion laser diodes are supposed to do :p (Im guessing I fucked the facet in the proccess and LEDd the thing)

that diode happly found its way into the scrap bin.

Woah, same thing happened to me with an sfaw210 diode!

I had no clue how the window came unglued or whatever. I wish I had thought of decanning it, I just took a needle and pushed on the piece of glass until it shattered... Now I have a zombie half led half laser diode that outputs at multiple wavelengths in a weird pattern. Lol

I am waiting on some heatsinks to come so I can finish the build, I ran it for 2 hours straight at about 30ma, seems okay I guess. If it dies, Ill get a new one. Until then, I am pleased to find this thing still working and not even LED.

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles damaging expensive diodes. It seems that these lenses can come out whenever they please during the harvest.

I appreciate all of the positive feedback, thanks
