All of them seem to have the same pinout as the closed can diodes. But in case this one is any different, check the diode, you should see two almost microscopic gold wires, (check the pic on the other page) they should be coming from the dye, one will be connected to the case, and the other one will be connected to one of the pins, that pin is the +, and the pin connected to the case is the -

Here's the pic of a closed can diode's polarity:

So it actually will work? Nice! I'm going to have to try this one again.

TheGr8Revealing, do you notice any substantial gain in power over lower speed 20x and 16x burners?

I'd like to say yes... but i dont have any other red burner diode DIY projects. This was my first one, and its actualy being underpowered by almost 200mA. Im getting a 420mA driver soon to really put it to the test.... but then again, i dont have anything to compare it to. sorry.

It's definitely more powerful than a 16x but the question is if it's more powerful than a regular long open can diode. Up until now many 18x and 20x burners have long open can diodes which appear to have the same strength even though one comes from an 18x drive and the other from a 20x. Maybe this 22x drive has a stronger long open can. We won't know until someone makes a power graph of the diode.

Extracted my 22x LG today... open can, long die as expected. Not particularly easy to extract, had to use my Dremel on the heatsink but all went well.

I don't have the logging up and running yet on my LPM but here are a few data points, taken with no optics:

100mA - 40mW
150mA - 80mW
200mA - 130mW
250mA - 180mW
300mA - 200mW
325mA - 240mW (that's as high as my supply went)

looks pretty good so far

Thanks for good data. *This is where this hobby starts and you are on track now. *
This looks close to the track of a Phasor diode.

I'm using Daedal's driver for all my laser stuff so far. Seeing as this new LG diode takes a lot of power given DanQ's nice data, what modifications to that driver do you guys think might be appropriate to get that diode to reach its full potential, or is the driver still adequate for this application?

It looks pretty similar to a long open can diode with a meredith glass lens, just a bit more powerful. (I'm guessing this is due to the fact that you didn't use any optics)
Try driving it at 420mA with a regular acrylic lens, my guess is that this is just as powerful as a normal 20x drive, but I may be wrong. We'll see.

Leave the driver as it is, you could keep the pot in there if you want, change the two 10 ohm resistors (or 5 ohm resistor, whatever you have in there) for a single 3 ohm resistor, that will limit the current to 420mA (416mA to be exact but who cares? ;D) which has been found to be the sweet spot for these long open cans. I think that at this point the pot would be useless unless you wanted to lower the 420mA to 350mA or something like that.

danq, what is the threshold current? could you also post the Vf of the diode at the currents above?

I cracked one open today. I'll try to get to it before the weekend. I have two nieces staying this weekend, so experimentation is pretty much out of the question.

Since Danq has already gotten some of the lower measurements, I'm only planning on taking measurements at the high end.

Peace,
dave

Thanks, Dave, for picking up on that last letter in my handle - "dank you" sounds much better than "Dang!" [sub]:P[/sub]

Could you do a spot-check of my data, say at the 40mA level? I may need to recalibrate my power meter (current measurements should be good as is though).

thanks,
DanQ

Hey, I just noticed that there were questions that I have not answered - for some reason I'm not getting thread notifications except sporadically. But I can't answer them right now anyway, because my workspace is temporarily discombobulated due to rearrangement of the furniture of my life...hopefully Dave's work will fill in the gaps [sub][smiley=beer.gif][/sub]

Did this diode lase at 40mA? Drlava's "round up" graph shows the long open can beginning to lase around 65mA. I don't think I have a driver here right now that will go as low as 40mA. Since I've kicked all of my blu-rays up into the higher ranges, I've sold, traded or just given away my lower range drivers.

Who wants an old 110mW blu-ray any more anyway

Peace,
dave

The way that notifications work now is that after you get one notification, it doesn't send any more until AFTER you visit the thread again.

Peace,
dave

I'm quoting this as this is very useful information. thanks danq. i'm driving my newly built one at 375mA with a glass lens, I was guessing outputs of around 250mW based on the DrLava long open can but this data seems to show that the 22x are a bit more powerful

I'm going to try to drive one at 450mA next time
