need help... with a greenie!

Ok I have dissected an IR filtered generic 10mW and powered it up and its very dim... possibly 1-2mW
Its the un pot modable type but is there any way of easily boosting the power...

I know if I run more voltage through it it should be brighter BUT I don't know what it can take without blowing...

I can run either 3V or 9V and nothing in between due to size issues...

oh I unscrewed themodule and re screwed it back together to see if that would help and nothing....
