I've been working on this on for awhile. Usually more thinking than doing. However, it is finito

Introducing my Pocket Blu-Ray

The host is a Dorcy 5mm LED.

Originally it used one AAA battery to light one 5mm white LED. I have been carrying this thing around for years. I kept it in my shaving kit so that I would have light wherever I went. Ever since I got into lasers, I've been eyeing this host. It was only after the flexdrive came on the scene that the idea came to life.

The completed unit uses a single 10440 3.6V cell, powering a flexdrive. The diode is from a PHR-308t sled harvested from a Toshiba SD-H802A DVD player. The tail switch is a "momentary" type switch, but it can be screwed in all the way to make a constant contact. It has an acrylic Sure lens with the back opened up. The finished laser (with the extension for the module head) is 3 3/4inches long (9.5cm). The bell is 3/4 inch in diameter (2cm). The battery case is 1/2 inch diameter (13mm).

Even as small as the flexdrive is, I had to sand off the corners and open the host's bell a bit

The bell didn't have enough room for the driver and the module, so it became necessary to make an extension. I could have gotten away with a simple "washer" interface, but I like the look of this more. The module is chrome and the corners would have been more "square." This flows better for me.

I used the original board only for supporting the + contact spring and wire. I soldered the - to the little "ring" that went between the board and the bell. Here it is with the power source sorted out

Here's the flexdrive wired in and hooked up to the dummy load. I set it to 90mA. I want this to last ;)

Nice job! A little pocket rocket :)
I have been lasering for less than a year and it is amazing just how far we have come in that time with the experiments and builds shared by the members here.

I like lasers but I also like to see good design and machining.
A+ all the way ;D Good work guy - a fine example of what can be done.

Nice tight package. I like that you saw it's potential and waited for the right components to come along (Dr. Lava & BluRay).

OMG I laughed soo hard. I use that method as well!!! so dag, did you get the low powered one built for your class?

haha I've done the same, my lips just seem more sensitive to the heat than anything else. =P
