Default My Fall Harvest

I ordered my Pioneer 112D dvd burner from newegg.com monday at about 10PM, and on wednesday when I got back from class at noon it was waiting for me! ;D

Well, I got all the way down to the diodes, and im going to ask a similar question that was asked...why cant i leave the heatsink on the diode and insert it into the module? wouldn't that provide better cooling, seeing as this heatsink alone is responsible for keeping the diode cool while operating at 18x(yes i know its pw, not cw, but still! haha) anyway, i figure instead of pulling it completely off I could just trim a bit in order to let it fit into the module. Then there would already be twice the normal heat-sinking with a module alone(i think). Anyway, here are the pictures of the two diodes. Im relatively posative that the open can one is the red, and the closed clan is the IR, correct me if im wrong. Also, im just throwing this onto a minimag for now, should i solder the cap directly between the pins? from everything ive read i gather thats the best idea, even if your not going to use Daedals regulating driver circuit. Anyway, give me some ideas, tips or opinions if you so please .

Link to the pics of the diodes :

thanks guys

I would agree that the open can is the red...

If you leave it in that holder...I'm not sure what that would do to your ability to focus the module....

I don't think anyone has ever tried it...

But consider this...

If you leave the diode in that HS..the diode's heat will migrate into the heatsink....if that heatsink is just placed in the AiziZ module..where will that heat migrate??

I would think that you are going to cook that diode if you leave it in there...

Secondly...you are taking a gamble if you don't use a resistor and a capacitor...
The cap will go across the leads like you mentioned...but a resistor in series on the positive leg is needed as well....

You might get lucky..then again it might go POOF the first time you try to power it.

I forget the size resistor that people use for the Minimag laser...but 10 Ohm 1/2 watt rings a bell.....someone needs to confirm this.

That being said..I have a minimag laser based on an open can diode..
All it has is a capacitor...no resistor.
I also run Lithium AA cells in it...and Mine still works fine.....

I keep on cycles SHORT...but MAN she can burn!!!

Oh...I know I will blow that diode soon.....but for now...it keeps working!

Good Luck to you!!

DoughDTD,
Thank you very much for the pics. I can now see why VaThink was saying this diode is very easy to harvest.

You will want to remove it from the heatsink and press it into the Aixiz module. LarryQ answered your other questions but if you want to be a bit safer you can use a 2.2 ohm resistor. This will give you 160 ma's of current into the diode using alkaline batteries. Unfortunately I do not have any lithiums to test it with. But truthfully, I would find another way. This diode can easily be driven with 250ma's and much more with proper cooling. I have noticed it does seem to heat up faster than closed can diodes. But it requires more than 3 volts, and something that you could use Daedal's circuit with would give you much better performance. This diode is worth it..

Ahh..2.2 Ohm....

Sry for saying 10 Ohm.....

I've got 10 Ohm on the brain lately ...

Have you decided on the best way to attack getting that diode out of the housing yet??

I've not seen that housing before...I'd be interested in hearing the best method to free the diode from that aluminium.

Where it is thin, in the upper right had corner, it looks like one snip with a pair of wire cutters will do it. The other way is to use a pair of pliers and carefully push it out. But according to VaThink, the brass is soft so one would need to be careful.

BTW, the 2.2 ohms applies to the GB diodes...sorry. :P I think it might be a bit different with the open cans.

I thought of pushing it out from the front as well...but those open ccan diodes are SO Sensitive!!!

I'd be hard pressed to press hard (YUK..YUK..YUK) on the end of that diode....

Larry, I know exactly what you mean about the sensitivity. But isn't it wonderful once the diode finds its new home in an Aixiz module...lol The open cans are beasts when it comes to pushing a LD to the limit. I dread harvesting the one that is waiting in my new LiteOn burner....after I get it harvested no more LiteOn's for me..lol

The LG GSA-H55NK 20X burner is the one I use...

My largest problem has been , and continues to be my BUTTERFINGERS in harvesting...

I will say that by looking at the pictures ..the LG here may be even easier to harvest.

And the price is right...

Try one sometime....

Interesting...I will definitely look into it. As long as the heatsink doesn't look like this one which is the same as the LiteOn models... :P

Jeesh...

Well you can't say it isn't well protected in there can you!!!

Good Luck with that one....

Did VaThink ever give a hint how they got the diode out of the pioneer???

I also assume he isn't on this forum..I looked for that name in the members listing...

The OP could probably use the info for the diode he is about to harvest.

He is on this forum but not often. I basically repeated in my post above what he posted on CPF. The original thread is here:

good lord! i almost got a lite on, glad i didn't *;D that should be a bit of a project getting that out of there, but yea im excited about the open diode too. *I'm probably just going to be very very patient with some small sets of cutters to get these out of the housing (im gonna make an IR too, just for *language tsk tsk* and giggles *) i dont think pressing on the open can diode would work to well, so patience is what its gonna have to be!! anyway, thanks for the input, my multimeter is in the mail and prob wont be here for a couple weeks (ARGH!!) so im gonna have to bring the diodes down to the campus lab to do some measurements and see wut combo of circuitry will be best. *whats the exact specs i want then, something to the order of

3.2 v
250-250 ma?

thanks for the help guys, and good luck with that lite on Gazoo, from now on I would suggest that 112D pioneer, it only took me like 20 min to get the diodes out. *

another small question, on the red open can diode, wut is that little gold hood scoop thing that seems to be in the way of the beam do. I've seen these diodes fully stripped and ready for the module and that gold(actually brass) part is still on it. IDK, just seems weird to me.

If I understand correctly, it is the heatsink for the actual LD chip. The LiteOn is a pain. The first one I harvested worked..the second one didn't... :'( And now for the third and last try..
