I believe what that is is indeed the pedistal/heatsink the actual chip sits on.

Nothing actually covers the beam as it leaves straight out the front of the chip.

Watch out for static in the harvest as well.....I've made more than my fair share of LED's out of open can diodes...

The arrow is pointing towards the heatsink for the chip and the heatsink must remain there. It does not get in the way. The beam will come out in the direction the diode is facing. The actual chip is mounted on that little bump.

One other thing...before taking the diode out of that housing....now is the time to de-solder the Mylar tape leads from the diode pins...

Let that Alum housing work for you as a heatsink BEFORE you free the diode from it.

If you do the desolder now..the process is MUCH easier than trying to hold that tiny diode all alone..later!

Im actually kinda worried about that part, i dont wanna kill my diode :'( :'( :'(

Oh well, busy for the next couple days, Ill post pics and hopefully goodnews when im done

While you are at it, also solder the diodes wires to eachother.. preferably do so the first moment you can. This will make your diode more or less immune to ESD problems while your remove the heatsink.
