I started building my barrel out of copper today didn't get much done but it's a start. Still need to wait for parts to get here so I can figure out the measurements.
I figured I would post pics of my progress in this thread. Here is the first installment.

1. started to drill out the Copper to fit 1 CR123 rechargeable.
2. started to get a rough cut on the outside diameter. (Copper is a real pain in the A** to work with at least on the lathe they have at work, maybe because it only does 1800 R.P.M. I dunno)

 Do you plan to coat the outside or just leave it natural?

Au natural it can do whatever it want's to do, I want it to look old. If I screw this one up (which I probably will) I would probably be better off using bronze because it looks better when it's tarnished. Oh well we will see what comes out of this. I still have no Idea how i'm gonna make the battery cap, well yes I do but have no idea if it can be done or not. My main problem with the cap is I don't have anything to thread the cap and the body with. I'll find a solution i'm sure.

Just finished the lens assembly. It's a dx module with plastic lens. I opened up the back end like was suggested in other posts . The head is Bronze hmm this thing is a mix and match dunno how well it will come out LOL.

That's the wrong attitude, your doing great so far, keep it up.[/quote]

Thanks Fire i'm using all the junk I can find to make it not really buying anything other than diode and electronics, so it will be a Frankenstein no doubt there.

The blueray I posted in the eyeball thread was made before I had a lathe capable of thread cutting, I found that good size threads for a CR123 size barrel can be stripped out of old camera lenses. that is what holds mine together.

I must say that I have broken more drills, over the years, in copper than any other metal. Measuring tight tolerances on a material that gets hot so quickly when machining is a bit of an art as well.... good luck with the build, I await the result with interest.

I so rarely get my threads on the lathe right.I had a perfect aperture cap made for my dvd laser that I lost. The new one I made just jiggles a little until I tighten it :-/ But seriously , you're doing a good job, and stick to the copper for ultra heatsinking ;D Btw, I heard that copper oxide is somewhat toxic :p

*Mental note* don't lick your laser...... :)
This implies: "Wash your hands after using this laser" not really user friendly if you ask
