Hey I got some 2.7 ohm, 1 watt resistors today. So, I changed out the 3 ohm resistor in my MXDL 300 and tried it out! The new current measures at 468mA's. The power is now 328.3mW's. This is with the Pioneer 112D open can diode, and a Meredith glass lens. Just to show the difference here... When this LD dies, I will probably change the driver back to a 3 ohm resistor. It feels like the 20mW gain is not that much for a 47mA change in current. Now, if I had a really HOT diode like Gazoo got recently, then we're talking! But for the 'normal' open cans, I really think the 420mA area is the 'sweet spot', like we had discussed before...

P.S. In case you didn't see it, I'm selling these heatsinks now:

I got my aixiz glass lens from DRLava today, 2 things: its a LOT longer than a normal aixiz screw in, giving me more focusing optoins, and 2: WOW!!!

I can clearly see with ym EYES the difference in optical power, its just unexplainable... Burns through CD cases in 5 seconds, lights matches instantly, and, I can feel the warmth on my SKIN!!!! WOW!!! When I get my LPM assembled, Ill give you a mW reading... for now, im owning just about ANYTHING dark colored in the house, and my sister is getting pissed from the "smoke" smell

THANK YOU DR. LAVA!!!

amk

I think it'll go away since you said you were only looking at the dot, although I'm not so sure. ::)
That's why I haven't even started to build my own laser, I'm waiting for mliptack to get the red goggles I need.

yea I put the laser aside for an hour or so, and it better now, it was only temporary. MAN I was scared! 'bout to crap my pants lol... oh and BTW, the aixiz glass is not a plastic screw in thingy, its some kind ofmetal, with a glas lens inside and stuff. it also doesnt have the backing that we take off the plastic versions, so its really cool. im so happy with it... I just need to saw off the back end of the aixiz module because right now I cant scrw the top on all the way, or the components will get smashed.

off to buy a dremel,

Can take pictures of the aixiz glass lens?

I use pipe cutter to cut the housing, you can buy it from home depot.

This is no matter to joke about. I truly hope your OK and I hope people everywhere take heed and protect themselves as even the DOT of a true burning laser can affect vision. Lets be safe and help everyone realize that even a laser dot on a white match head is dangerous to the eyes at practically any viewing distance.

If you do not have laser safety glasses for your color laser, at least view your laser via through a cam/webcam connected to your pc and avoid direct viewing of the diode dot and object your attempting to ignite/burst or burn.

this is a very important and well made point. (BTW use [ quote] [ /quote] (wituot spaces) for quotes) I was unbelivably scared, thinking I screwed my eyes for good. it was temporary, but as supernova said, DO NOT OPERATE HIGH POWERED LASERS WITHOUT GOGGLES, they are going for $35 each in a GB right now, and your eyes are well worth over $35. I orderd one.

BTW im taking pics now

I didn't want to specifically quote anyone. But as fas as using a cam/webcam as a filter...

I have my red on a pot and i can set it to nil and still see a faint dot, this dot allows me to aim it and set it, then i can move behind the wall/curtain/board and use my webcam or even my digicam in avi movie mode and via usb see it on my pc. Its not an answer to goggles, but its a sure way to be positive that your not viewing any bad rays.

Dazzle makes a usb adapter for analog cams among others and many digicams have a usb dongle, but unless you can trim your laser down to close to nil, your gonna need vision protection somewhere on your trials. I really like the "use a camera to pc" idea but unless your super careful and a good engineer, glasses are pretty much a "have to have" as at some point you will have to see the beam and align it.

I hope people realize that among total eye failure there are also partial effects that can occur, most common is probably a haze or a fog sensation in affected areas/zones that were exposed.

I honestly hope everyone here and elsewhere takes precautions to prevent any vision issues.

MXDL open can, SenKat diode box (which I tried to sell but could not), and empty aixiz module waiting for one of the IR diodes im getting from "TheMonk" (all resting on top of my new G1s-B2):

Nice close up pictures you are taken.
The glass lens absolutely worth the money, I wonder why no one was comparing the different lens, instead people just increase mA to the diode.
If you need to cut the housing shorter, remove the lower part first and attach it to the empty module, cut it to a desire length using a pipe cutter. For comparison my Dorcy Open Can acrylic lens running at 360mA takes about 9~10 seconds to burn through CD case.

amk - I am glad you are ok. I cringe when I read posts like your concerning close calls with the eyes.

The lens looks great. Do you know if it is AR coated? A bluish tint on the lens means it probably is. An AR coated lens will put out a bit more power.

Hey amk, how much was the glass lens? Also, please give more details about the focusing options you are talking about. The glass Meredith lenses are pretty much either in focus, or not. The difference between 5' focus, and infinity, is such a 'hair' turn, that you just set the focus to infinity, and that is it...

i bought one from Dr. Lava for $6 shipped. it included the removable silver screw on thingy.

It is longer, meaning I can screw it in closer to the diode, meaning I can focus to a smaller dot at farther distances. also, it screws out farther from the diode without popping out of the aixiz module, meaning I can focus closer up and to a smaller dot closer up. with the normal short aixiz lenses, you cant focus as well as these.

all I can say is i can visually see the difference in optical power, its amazing! I got my coherent thermal pile head today, and when my parts come ill assemble the LPM and give y'all a powere reading.

amk
