Default Mxdl Open can 460ma / 803T 150ma Reup =)

Hello all ! *
it was approx 2 month ago that i found this amazing forum and that's how i decided to make some experiment with laser diode. Here is some picture of my last laser :
First, at the beginning i bought a red module on DX

But i was a noob and i connect the red pin to the green pin, so the diode fried OMG *;D

I have a lot of aixiz/dx (4.3 $) module, but they are tynier than the red DX module and a nice improvement is in the fitting of the diode in this module : no need to press the diode in the module, just place the diode, and then screw up the little brass ring : perfect ! *8-)

This module is heavier than the aixiz, so it act as a good heatsinker too, perhaps a little long, but not a problem at all. I love this module, if someone know where to find them alone ? *

I use the mc33269 regulator (max 800 ma) from rckstr's driver, its smaller than the LM317 so it fit perfectly in the Mxdl, and i build a smal heatsink in copper for the regulator, coz at 450 ma, it was too hot for me *:P, thus i got a cute mushroom type regulator lol *;D *

I use a aixiz glass lens, but can't screw too much in the module, so i cut the lens a bit to fit it in *

I made an other heatsink for the diode, from the DX'heatsinker . *I also use a potentiometer 100 ohm (dont have 10 ohm ) which can go to 0.05 ohm, connected in serie with 2.9 ohm resistor (i use a lot of resistor to reduce over temp damage). The potentiometer can be short circuit using a jumper from motherboard (so i have a 2.9 ohm resistor, 460 mA, instead 2.9+0.05 when potentiometer is set to "0" ).

The next step is the harvesting of the laser diode , from a pioneer 115D, no problem to harvest the diode, juste take time (but more than the 10 minute of The Monk *8-))

I made a very crap connection to the diode, but i fear the overt temp damage with my soldering iron (30W, too hot), so i don't do a nice job to prevent risk. The assembly is a bit hard but fit with some filing off modification

as u can see, the potentiometer is short with a jumper, im at 460 mA, beamshot with some water fog...
At last, my first Mxdl, a blue ray diode from psxboy at 150 ma,on a ddl style driver; my mother make a nice package too *

Im going to make another Mod and other beamshot when night will come !

And a last picture (not laser ) of my corona experiments :

hope u enjoy it !
Thanks you for your precious forum ! *

edit :re-up picture on imageshack, free.fr too laggy for non- free user *

man your server must be taking a pounding, hosting all those high res pics!

looks awesome though. not too sure about the huge glob of resistors that you made.... lol

I think your corona is arcing a bit , a little too much current flowing there. I was used to work in a lab working on atmospheric pressure plasma, we used a dielectric barrier discharge, but the corona was always interesting and a lot of the science of the plasma could be carried over. Awesome that you have your very own though. What kind of power supply are you running it on?

28kV, very nice. *I was just trying to imagine the scale of the photo, like how big it is. *With 28kV, I'm guessing you could have better than a 2cm gap, pretty awesome in my estimation. *Exactly how big is the gap between the electrodes there?

This is a photo of the reactor we used. *It's at atmospheric pressure, but a helium plasma (high helium flow in and open to the atmosphere exit from the chamber). *The helium has a lower breakdown voltage, and with the dielectric barriers and a wicked awesome power supply, this photo is of it running with a greater than 5 cm gap. *The power supply at this point (I'm guessing because I don't remember exactly the numbers) was probably pushing 60V and 4A on the supply side of the transformer, and over 5000V and a few dozen mA on the output/plasma side of the transformer. *Our system worked best at around 2kHz (with square waveform, part of why the power supply was so wicked awesome), depending on a whole host of things. *Sorry for the derail, you brought it on yourself when you put up pictures of a homemade corona discharge to someone who worked with plasma for all of college. *;D

Oh, and good looking results on the lasers too *;D.

Here is the picture to see the scale of my model *(next is the skelleton of dvd harvested * )

Your estimation is right ! my gap is exactly 2.5 cm depending of humidity of air (much arc), but 2.5 give a stable corona effect in standart condition *
Your photo is very interesting, never see such a thing before, thanks for post ! i was trying to obtain the same thing like american antigravity :

.. but had problem so i build a crap/ homemade model.
Your photo show the same result, but what was the aim of your experience in helium? *

At last, i worked on my laser this day, to put a brass ring (i made a lot of mistake, and got a lot of luck to have a live diode now)

My big blu-rays are good for about 150 yards to still be able to see a "dot" on a surface. Remember, the 405nm wavelength is much more easily "scattered" by the air. You probably also noticed that the beam looks "wider" at a distance than the red does.

Peace,
dave

**EDIT** Nice picture

You'r right daguin ! the blue beam seems to diverge a lot, in fact picture show that the divergence is the same as the red beam, our eye are weaker at this wavelenght, crap

Well, it's not "crap." It is simply one of the characteristics of this wavelength. 405nm can "do" much more interesting stuff than 660nm can.

Peace,
dave
