shouldn't that be always (or when Vin is >3V) 3V?
and btw, what is "too hot" for the lm317? imo it is getting quite warm when touching it, but i have no idea how much would be too much...

You will not be able to put 3V in and get 3V out, there is a dropoff voltage(a small voltage that is "lost" through the regulator). Too hot is when you burn your finger ;) If it's bearable, it's okay.

you got me wrong there i think. he was talking about the voltage differential being responsible for the heat generated by the lm317 (more Vdiff equals more temp).
as i understand it the voltage differential is always 3V in our case, no matter what current. so the laser power shouldn't have an effect on the temperature?

Yes, these regulators "throw away" excess voltage as heat... They do have a built-in thermal shutdown though, something like 150 degrees celsius, where they'll turn themselves off to avoid damage. They can get very very warm and that's normal, though if they burn your skin and sizzle you might want to add a heatsink or lower your input voltage.

What do you think of use this scheme? I will try use a larger heatsink!

I finally finished!
I just used a DC source with multiple outputs, where I used 12V to the cooler and 3.5V for the laser pen.

Thanks guys for all help!! :)

Andre

That looks like a good single line, time to crank up the fog machine :).

Nice build.

Thanks rog8811!

You know any DIY fog machine project?

No but have a look at ebay, I bought 2 "non working" sound lab foggers for about $5 each..... customers returned them as faulty..... the only fault I could find was they had not read the manual :)

I made a homemade smoke machine and fluid smoke! I used a solution of 30% glycerol + 70% distilled water with steam iron. The results is very nice!!!

Here in Brazil the smoke machine costs R$ 250.00! Extremely expensive. :'(

Just for your reference:

1R$ = 0,42 US$
1L of gasoline = R$ 2.70
MacDonalds Number 1 = R$14.00
Bluray Player = R$1200,00
1L of smoke fluid = R$10.00
1L glycerin 100% = R$30.00
Steam iron = R$26,00

Tomorrow I will buy some smoke fluid and try with steam iron ! ;)

I tried the smoke fluid and de results are the same than solution of 30% glycerol + 70% distilled water using steam iron!

But the glycerol solution not have a health safety certificate! :-?

Smoke fluid have glicerin and other stuffs (diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, propylene glycol, triethylene glycol, etc...)!
But the quetion is...what proportion?! and ...What makes it safe? :-?
