He wants to sear tuna.

@dnar Bummer man. Where I live they have great sushi. Even the 'all you can eat' places are great.

Where do you live?
Because I've never been to an "all you can eat" sushi restaurant that I would consider "great."

It really depends, there are some Sushi buffets in CA that are quite impressive, but your standard run of the mill buffet would pretty much be garbage.

I notice your from CA, but not where specifically. In some of the major hot spots for CA you should be able to track down a good Sushi buffet, but again, don't just go to any buffet, 90% of the buffets will be exactly what you were expecting, there are very few that are actually high quality but they do exist.

The ones TJ posted seem a lot better than the places I've been.
I normally find a couple good places and stick to 'em.

There is one place by my house that I liked, but my favorite chef left and since then it hasn't been as good.

I live in Riverside County, and I've been pretty unsatisfied with most of the stuff in my area.

I'm the same way with Chinese. I can't stand Panda Express, Pick up Stix, and the like... if I'm in the mood for Chinese food, I'll drive an hour or so to somewhere where they serve real Chinese food. :p

Its the same here. That restaurant is not exactly around the corner LOL. But the excursion is worth it.

I have just been checking, apart from the quite nice takeout sushi around the corner, Copenhagen is full of places.
Including several "running sushi" places at something like 200Kr. ($40-50, this is the most expensive town in the world)

The place I posted was $17 for lunch, and I think ~$25 for dinner.

Funny story, I just got back from a Chinese restaurant I used to go to long ago. When we pulled up we realized it changed hands into a sushi restaurant. It wasn't all you can eat, but the sushi was unbelievable. Kind of pricey, but off the boat freshness.

Fun fact:

Abstract
Time resolved thermal lens (TL) spectrometry is applied to the study of the thermal diffusivity of edible oils such as olive, and refined and thermally treated avocado oils. A two laser mismatched-mode experimental configuration was used, with a He–Ne laser as a probe beam and an Ar+ laser as the excitation one. The characteristic time constant of the transient thermal lens was obtained by fitting the experimental data to the theoretical expression for a transient thermal lens. The results showed that virgin olive oil has a higher thermal diffusivity than for refined and thermally treated avocado oils. This measured thermal property may contribute to a better understanding of the quality of edible oils, which is very important in the food industry. The thermal diffusivity results for virgin olive oil, obtained from this technique, agree with those reported in the literature.

you should be careful openly using a laser for anything these days lol
there are some with so little knowledge of science that they thought they could get cancer from smoking a cigarrette I lit for them with the laser (cancer from the laser, not from cigarrette as the source lol)

I think laser-prepared foods might sell to a certain crowd. Personally i would not be impressed since i've seen lasers of many kinds performing all different feats, but the general audience might be very impressed if you sear a piece of fish in front of them using a laser.

Safety goggles would be a must, but i dont think that would remove much from the overall experience.

I've only tried sushi once. It was horrible.

The raw fish tasted exactly as i had expected it to, like raw fish!
and it had some nasty sticky white rice, wrapped in seaweed.

I tried to get it down but i had to spit it out.

I'm with ya, I can't handle the raw fish either lol. But my Sister loves sushi so we used to go out together. She'd eat the raw stuff, I'd order the cooked stuff lol. If you get the cooked versions it can actually be pretty good stuff, but your options are far more limited for the cooked variations of sushi.

Well, if you order raw fish, expect to get exactly that :)

I personally like good tuna or salmon sashimi, but those don't involve any searing.

Perhaps its possible to cut nice shaped pieces from sashimi using a laser, but i doubt the edges will taste any good. It might work better on things that benefit in taste from a bit of charring, perhaps bacon, ham or some cheeses.

And you could always do the top of the creme brulee - though i expect that to take forever using anything but bluray.

^ no, they exist (all the CO2 surgical units uses them for guide the laser to the handheld part) ..... the only problem can be the cost ..... instead "common" solid core, they use sub-micrometric alternate layers of silica and special polymers, that made them useable from 750nm to 10600nm, and have a hollow core for permit the flow of the cooling gas, and the cost of these fibers is prohibitive for any non-specialized application.

Edit: found some catalogs from OmniGuide ..... 1000$ for a pair of meters of fiber, WTH :wtf:

Also, a precisation, cause i've seen that my words are expressed in not-so-clear way ..... the fiber uses the multilayer tube for product a MIRROR TUBE, are not the layers that conduct the beam as in the normal fibers ..... the whole fiber is a tube, with an internal reflection index near the 100% efficency (99,98%, i think is the best reached actually), so the light "bounce inside" it from one side to the other, and the hollow inside is also used for cool it with a cooling gas flow (for the heat generated from the fraction of the light that is not reflected perfectly) ..... and the whole fiber is like a pair of millimeters of diameter, and very flexible.
